Only one public house and tavern worth the name operates in the sleepy thorp of Aspenstar, and it is owned and run (some would say dominated) by the boisterous, rollicking satyr, Ilexor. Unlike most of his kin, Ilexor has spent time as an adventurer, carousing, brawling, womanizing, and sneaking his way from the Tallwood, to Port Hope, and east from there across the desert—and then back again. Upon his return he decided to quiet down from the worldly life, and cashed in much of the treasure he accumulated in his wanderings, to build and set up operation in his pride and joy, the Gentle Bramble Tavern and Traveler’s Hostel. He maintains that the ire of several notable members of the growing Velvet Purse organization based in Port Hope, which he garnered through indiscreet dalliances with their wives and mistresses, had nothing whatsoever to do with this decision.

Those who know the cheerful, jokesome satyr concede that he’s probably telling the truth. His inn has become quite an attraction in the region, and all sorts of adventurous guests seek his doorstep, ranging from his former adventuring companions, to jaded young mercantile lords and aristocrats from Port Hope, to gnomish bards, to pixies with a hankering to meet mortals first hand. Ilexor, for his part, provides musical entertainment rivaling that of many of the region’s finest bards. Additionally, he’s known to stock a fine selection of ale, wine, and spirits, importing a number of his favorite potables from among the staggering array of beverages he’s sampled in his years as an adventurer. The cuisine served at Ilexor’s table is widely held to be an adventure in and of itself, since the proprietor of the Gentle Bramble employs a goblin named Gwlip (N male goblin rog1/exp1), an outcast from one of the tribes inhabiting the mountains bordering the eastern desert, whom he befriended in his travels. Gwlip’s cooking is one of the chief attractions for repeat visitors to the Bramble, so long as Ilexor is careful to prevent his friend and employee from adding cat or rat meat to the stew pot. But in any case, Ilexor’s business practices certainly do not lend themselves to the impression that he is hiding from anyone or anything.

Aside from his role as one of the pillars of Aspenstar’s otherwise unremarkable economic community, Ilexor has made himself useful to the town as a means of collecting and passing along news of the outside world, posing, as he does, one of the primary justifications for outsiders to journey all the way into the Tallwood despite the strictures imposed by the past and present rulers of Woods End. Winilistrae tolerates his presence in Aspenstar because he’s demonstrated his ability and willingness to aid in the thorp’s defense, and because he has regularly exhibited a knack for recognizing trouble before it starts and eliminating it just as quickly.
