Gnome Bard

I decided to start with a gnome for the bard class. Gnome is the only core race with the bard class as its favored class, so I thought it would be fitting.

Human Fighter (CR 1-20)

Given that the hallmarks of the human PC race presented in the Player's Handbook v3.5 are its extra feat and extra skill point per level, I opted with the following NPC to focus on a build which is feat-intensive even for a fighter. The NPC begins pretty simply, as a tactical battlefield-control unit. You can toss it at your PCs as-is and expect it to inflict credible damage as well as considerable disruption of their ability to move freely across the map.

The NPC below gains a slight edge on the human fighter early on, both in damage-dealing capacity and in its ability to absorb damage; the dwarf enjoys higher Con than the human, and its racial familiarity with the dwarven waraxe lends it a slightly more powerful one-handed weapon than the norm without the associated opportunity cost of spending a feat for Exotic Weapon Proficiency. This makes the dwarf a fine choice for builds depending on the waraxe as a one-handed weapon and a shield.

The half-elf below is designed to emphasize the half-elf's adaptability. As much as humans, the half-elf is supposed to be able to thrive in any situation. To this end, the half-elf fighter thrives by being able to do an adequate job at almost anything.

The gnome fighter NPC presented below is far from ideal. Of all the core races, gnomes are arguably the least suitable for the fighter class; although they gain a bonus to Constitution, they also take a penalty to Strength, and especially at low levels this hurts their capacity to deal straight damage. Additionally, gnomes' small size category makes them susceptible to bull rush, trip, and grapple attacks, all of which are a substantial hazard to melee fighters.

The half-orc fighter below does for melee combat what the elf fighter does for ranged combat. This NPC is simple to use. You move it next to a PC, and hit the PC with a halberd, which causes enormous amounts of damage. By default, the level 20 version of this NPC causes an average of 20.5 damage per successful attack. But with a +31 attack bonus, it's a great idea to assess yourself a -5 penalty to your attacks via Power Attack, so that you can get an extra +10 to damage. A critical hit from this NPC can potentially kill anything but another dedicated melee character in one fell swoop. 

This is not a versatile build. You can count on basic competency with a ranged weapon, but no more. Until and unless you get into melee range, this NPC is weak. But it has a truly exceptional Strength bonus for most of its lifetime (at the very highest levels, I opted to improve other gear than its belt of giant strength), and this makes it extremely good at using Improved Bull Rush and Improved Overrun to break up the PCs' formations. Once this NPC starts using Improved Sunder and its adamantine halberd, it's also quite likely that your party's warriors will have second thoughts about whether it's financially reasonable for them to risk having a weapon destroyed trying to protect the wizard.

Against parties that feature extremely high attack bonuses on their melee combatants, it is useful at higher levels to consider attacking as a sword and shield rig; I arranged for this NPC to gain Two-Weapon Fighting and Improved Shield Bash at levels 18-20, so that at upper end of the game it'll be possible for this NPC to act as a credible tank in a small or solo encounter.
