Your First Character

Mine was rolled up probably a week or two after the Nth time seeing the 80s Excalibur movie. I played a necromancer with a chrome dome just like Merlin's. This was way back in 2E when parts of the rulebook read like an engineering textbook and you had to roll for hit points for your first level and all of that, so maybe jumping right into the thick of things with a spellcaster wasn't so hot. But I got my licks in with chill touch like a boss.

I don't remember muich else about him, maybe we never really played much after that first time with those characters. But I do remember it was my childhood friends Nick and Chase who introduced me to the game. I was 12, and they had moved away five or six years prior but we eventually reconnected when I was in middle school. Obviously, it changed my life for the better.

A paladin in a 2nd edition game run by a DM who could tell a story, but didn't have much concept of the game rules. And he also handed out deus ex machina like it was candy. Took out a giant spider web in a cavern ala Krull, but died when he didn't escape the burning web quick enough.

A half-elf rogue/sorcerer named Malben. He was CN, a professional thief, and he eventually metamorphosed into a half-dragon. Later, he came back as an NPC in the first game I ran, having completed his transformation into a dragon (along with an alignment drift to LN). This would have been in late 2000; the DM had gotten hold of a playtest copy of the rules for 3.0 on PDF.

I guess technically I played a cleric in 2nd edition, but that was for one night, and I am pretty sure the character was pre-generated. He was first level, and the rest of the party was like . . . tenth? Something like that. I was useless and bored.

My first character was a dark elf male cleric. My buddy just bought the 2E Forgotten Realms Underdark supplement. I was a huge Salvatore fan at the time so playing a dark elf in the summer of 91 was my imagination given life of sorts.

My first "real" character, defined by my interest in him, was another dark elf ranger. Straight up, and unabashedly, a pure Drizzt clone. Lavender eyes, dual scimitars and all.

I miss those days sometimes.

Mine was a human paladin, playing a 1st edition module with hybrid 1st-2nd edition rules. His name was David O'Hallic and he was the cliche "I detect he's evil, let's kill and rob him!" guy. We built our characters with 2nd edition rules for the most part, but the DM used 1st edition tools such as the "assassination" chart for chances to immediately slay a character (which he did to several PCs).

My first character was a dwarf fighter named Jugg'r. Of course you all know him as the best PC to ever grace these boards. Honestly though, creating Jugg was a revelation for me. After talking with Mike and some of you on that zombie game (forgot the name), he convinced me how sweet-ass RPGs were.

That had to be somewhere around 2008. My love for gaming has grown exponentially since then and I have created and played dozens of different PCs across at least a dozen game systems. Most have been PbP but I have also tested my skills at sit down games as well.

I owe it all to this site and Mike in particular. Along the way I have made some great acquaintances and more than one good friend.

So, thanks guys.

I've been playing D&D for a long time, but at first it was pretty informal. My oldest brother had a bunch of the books, but didn't really get into it. My older brother ran some things for me. It was 1st edition. You roll your character and then you decide what you are based on what you roll. If you have good enough stats, you could choose to be a wizard or a cleric. I didn't. My first character was a Fighter. But I did get lucky and rolled a random psionic talent. I had limited telekinesis.

The memories I have of the character are pretty vague. I remember nearly getting eaten by an ogre. He had me and was trying to shove me down his throat. My telekinesis saved me - I used that ability to shove my boot into his throat and he choked to death on it.

I also remember picking up a mercenary buddy that was very dumb. I was really sad when he died horribly - probably more so than when my character probably inevitably died. My older brother wasn't usually nice to me, so I'm sure he arranged exciting ways for me to die. I definitely don't remember ever being high level with him.
