New 5e Game

I'm going to start running a new 5e game here, called Watchers of the Dawn. You're all invited to join us at the subforum. It'll be based primarily in Sigil, but Planescape allows for concepts from just about anywhere. Let me know if you're interested in playing.

I need to check out the 5E rules on the SRD. But I think Planescape is pretty neat so I'm definitely curious.

Will the game start at 1st level?

Will there be cake?

Game will start at first level. There will be cake. It is Planescape, so it may be cake flavored with existential crisis. Check out the Watchers of the Dawn subforum if interested.

I've never dabbled in 5E, so it is tempting. Now that I know there is cake, I am getting giddy.

I haven't forgotten about this, I just have a backlog of other stuff to get to before I can sink my teeth into this project. I have a copy of the Player's Handbook now and am cooking up a few different character concepts. However, re: the rules variants mentioned in one of the posts on your sub-forum, I'll need a summary of those because I only have the one book.

Customizing Ability Scores, PHB page 13
We'll be using point buy

Standard Humans and Variant Humans, PHB page 31
There are two types of human. In this game, you can play either.

Criminal Background, PHB page 130
Entertainer Background, PHB page 131
Guild Artisan Background, PHB page 133
Noble Background, PHB page 136
Sailor Background, PHB page 139
All of these backgrounds are permitted, and you can also use the optional fluff which changes the style but leaves the mechanics in place.

Feats, PHB page 165
Instead of taking an Ability Score Improvement, you may choose to take a feat.

Skills with Different Abilities, PHB page 175
Depending on the circumstance, you can make an argument for unusual combinations of Attribute + Skill.

Playing on a Grid, PHB page 192
Default 5e is descriptive combat. Our combats, which will take place in Roll20, will use the familiar grid from 3.5. Keep in mind, all diagonal movement is also 5 feet.

Renown, DMG page 22
A mechanical system for representing how well known a character is with a faction.

Optional Rules for all Outer Planes, DMG page 59-67
Outer planes such as Limbo, Baator, etc. have optional rules. We'll use all of them.

Loyalty, DMG page 93
NPCs who follow your PC have a mechanic called Loyalty that we will use.

Villainous Class Options, DMG page 96
Oathbreaker Paladins and Clerics with the Death Domain are permitted.

Building a Stronghold, DMG page 128
Rules for building your base.

Crafting Magic Items, DMG page 129
By default, there are no rules to make your own (non-custom) magic items. We will use the optional rules to build your own non-custom magic items.

Mixing Potions, DMG page 140
Generally speaking, please don't mix two potions together and drink it. It can have deleterious effects on your health. These rules explain how.

Scroll Mishaps, DMG page 140
If you're casting spells you can't cast, these rules explain how big the explosion can be.

Wands that don’t recharge, DMG page 141
Wands in 5e usually gain a number of charges daily. In this game, they won't.

Alternatives to Epic Boons, DMG page 230
If we get to level 20 (not anytime soon) I'll use these rules.

Flanking, DMG page 251
If you're flanking, you get advantage to attack.

Crafting Poison, DMG page 258
For those of you feeling cruel.

Hero Points, DMG page 264
Same as d20 Modern, and very similar to Pathfinder.

Gritty Realism, DMG page 267
By default, a short rest is one hour and a long rest is eight. For our game, a short rest is eight hours and a long rest is one week. Please keep in mind that this game will be played in real time. I also do not define rest as "sleep," instead it is taking it easy physically. Reading a book constitutes rest.

All Action Options, DMG page 271 - 272

Injuries, DMG page 272
You may receive particularly vicious wounds when you are greviously injured.

If anybody on here wants help with the 5e rule set, let me know. Game is just getting started!

The new year has really put me through the ringer. Work is taking up less and less of my personal time compared to 2016 but homeschooling the little dude really keeps my hands full. I'm afraid I'm going to have to sit this one out after all, but I am following it with interest. I dig your multimedia format.

I'm going to reboot this game, but without the existential angst of Sigil. If folks are interested in a 5e game, let me know.

Is the material available in the 5E SRD at d20srd.org sufficient to create and run a character? I thought I had a PDF copy of the 5E PHB on Google Drive but something must have happened to it. If I can't use the SRD I might have a problem participating.

I'm at least willing to give it a whirl. When you say "without all the existential angst of Sigil," do you mean it isn't a Planescape game at all anymore?

The material on the SRD is sufficient, and you're also welcome to explore most of the Unearthed Arcana, Volo's Guide to Monsters, Xanathar's Guide to Everything, or the material on DnD Beyond.

The game won't be Planescape anymore, based on some discussions had with other players. I'll send you a few details.

Did anyone invite this advertisement posting?

No

Okay, didn't think so. It's a violation of our TOC, in that case.

I thought it was a new thread. Definitely not something that should be here.

Strictly speaking, it's not supposed to be anywhere on this forum. If people want to advertise on this site, they owe Fixxxer some money. Or a blowjob, or a chicken. Something, anyway.

I'd have let it go if he had actually been a member of the community here, but it looks like he created the account solely to tell us all about his useless Kickstarter.
