Chapter 1: Meeting Again for the First Time (OOC)

Welcome to Kill-Team Doomsayer. You know what to do.

This is as good a place as any to mark it down, but to add a little about Inquisitors (this is information all Astartes would know).

Those who have worked for years and years and decades, who have fought and killed and harnessed their psychic powers enough to survive the most grueling of ordeals, those few like Carmillus who bear the mantle of "Inquisitor" are nigh above the law. They answer only to their direct superiors within their Ordos and the High Lords of Terra themselves. An Inquisitors word is law as if the Emperor himself were saying it. They have the power to execute anyone they deem a threat, heretic or traitor. They have the power to declare, albeit with compelling evidence and approval from the High Lords of Terra, a Chapter of Space Marines Excommuniate-Traitoris and Renegade. They have the power to call upon a Kill Ship, a destroyer of worlds, to destroy every shred of life on a habitable planet and destroy the planet from orbit, should they deem the threat of that planet too high to contain, control or allow to spread. They are exceptionally powerful psykers, yet not quite as powerful as their superhuman Astartes colleagues. They have access to the absolute best technology available in the galaxy - Imperial or Xenos. Depending on their order, they are privy to the most classified information on Xenos, Heretics, Daemons, the Warp and anything else with proper security clearance. This is why when an Inquisitor turns or is declared renegade, they become target number 1 in the galaxy.

Most Inquisitors fall into different philosophical schools on how to do things. The two broad philosophical sects are the Puritans and the Radicals. Puritans are by-the-book anything other than the Imperial Creed is heresy. Radicals are not shy to utilize whatever tools or means necessary to secure victory for the Imperium. Most Inquisitors fall somewhere in between these two thoughts - the Grey area.

Essentially, they are above the law BAMF that you don't want to get on the wrong side of. And having one as an ally is a good thing in all cases.

Then we're fortunate to be working so closely with one.

Unless we fuck it up.

Or unless she is actually a heretic renegade that has the entire Watch Fortress fooled...

BOOM!

drumandfight

Nope. Too French. And let us be honest, the French could never field Astartes, much less a Primarch.

Fixxxer

I was thinking Lithuanian, personally. But when I say it out loud, I actually hear more of a West African or possibly Caribbean Islander sort of accent.

Talanall is our resident linguistic expert. Maybe we should ask him how he would say it out loud.

drumandfight
drumandfight's picture

I would, but I am now officially over it. Rowboat Guy-in-men it is.

mruozu

The French can barely field human soldiers.

drumandfight
drumandfight's picture

They do it, but it is like they only go to surrender training.

deadDMwalking
deadDMwalking's picture

Gotta step up for my homeboys.

"...and a certain unconscious brutality of hurry and gesture in the men is related to their inexhaustible and extraordinary military courage. (…) Let a fool hate France."
- G.K. Chesterton

"The French soldiers are grand. They are grand. There is no other word to express it."
- Arthur Conan Doyle, A visit to three fronts (1916)

"Their business is war, and they do their business."
- R. Kipling, France at war (1915)

I know they get a bad rap for World War II - and I have my own issues with their performance. But they lost a whole generation in World War I. I could write an essay on how their losses were unnecessary and the result of stubbornness, but I can't say it was because of a lack of courage.

To Americans, France and Germany seem to be roughly the same size. At the start of World War II, the population of Germany was roughly double that of France.

Despite our confidence in our superior military, nobody in this country is eager to go to war with China. That'd be something like France's decision to declare war on Germany in World War II - and keep in mind that they declared war because Germany invaded Poland. We didn't declare War even after they had swallowed up everyone else and were deep into Russia - and only then because we were attacked directly by Japan.

I get our resentment of France - I know a lot about it. But mostly, it's unwarranted and unfair, and it demeans us as Americans.

drumandfight
drumandfight's picture

I bet you're great at parties.

drumandfight
drumandfight's picture

"But they lost a whole generation in World War I"

Yep. Not a strong argument when you realize that so did the Germans and then two decades later they are face stomp fucking everyone in sight.

Not that it matters because reasons for abstract notions as to why a certain country gains a bad wrap or neither here nor there.

We joke about it because it is easy and funny. When I say, "You are a dickhead," I do not legitimately think your head resembles a penis. And anyone who wrote out the reasons why your head did not look like a penis is obviously missing the point of a joke aimed purely at making fun of something regardless of whether or not it is warranted.

deadDMwalking
deadDMwalking's picture

But my head - it is rather penis shaped.

deadDMwalking
deadDMwalking's picture

Expanding my earlier point, the fact that France lost a generation of young men, in and of itself, isn't enough to explain why they were so quickly defeated in World War II. While the Germans lost more men (total), they lost a smaller percentage of their overall population, but when we're talking in round figures, we can say they were impacted roughly equally.

After the War, despite the 'victory', France was not eager for another conflict of that type again. They largely adopted a 'peace-time footing' (as the US had historically done after all wars prior to WWII) with a much smaller military expenditure than during the war. That isn't to say they didn't spend huge sums of money of defense - they did. The thing is, it was strongly geared toward fixed defenses. The Maginot Line was a technological wonder for it's age - a Death Star of the early 20th century. But we all know that the Germans bypassed the line by invading through Belgium.

France's major blunder was trusting that Belgium would take longer to fall than it did. Germans invented a new type of war that nobody - not even the Americans, were ready for on a tactical level. World War II saw an acceleration of technological development to counter the carefully applied benefits of combined arms. But it wasn't even clear that was necessary until France folded.

But yeah - France sucks....

Fixxxer
Fixxxer's picture

I was going to make the point out the Maginot Line, but DDMW summed it up nicely, save that Belgium didn't exactly "fall" so much as they "fucked France in the ass by announcing neutrality should anyone spark up another Great War, despite having signed a mutual defense pact." Which is not to say that there wasn't fighting in Belgium, but it's a safe thing to say that King Leopold rolled over quick enough to make his capitulation seem almost like an act of collaboration with the Axis forces. That said, the evidence shows that just about everything he did was calculated towards the preservation of the Belgian people, he just didn't put any effort into thinking about what might be best for all the people of Europe.

Europe's quick fall to the German blitzkrieg highlights a fundamental flaw with the now-outdated practice of maintaining a tiny military during peace time. All it takes is for one nation to gear up as quickly as possible and he can march all over his neighbors before they have a chance to react.

But, yeah... France. Like D&F said, we pick on France for being ineffective at war in the same way that we pick on Canada for being overly polite or the United States for being full of fat retards. I've often joked that the French are snooty because they're pissed off that they don't have a rifle to drop or that the French-invented Parkour is really just the sport of running away, but I've also made thousands of "'MERICA!" jokes, too, so I think it all evens out.

drumandfight
drumandfight's picture

One of the hardest fighting forces on Earth is the French Foreign Legion.

The reason why they are so awesome is in their name.

Important Post, Bitches!

I want to encourage between mission roleplaying opportunities for everyone so this game doesn't feel like one big shoot fest with eating breaks in between. Some of you might prefer that, but I want the experience to be more fulfilling. I am trying to come up with a system to push people to interact with the NPCs outside of missions. Of course, you do not have to do this and if you feel like your PC would not do it, then cool.

Doomsayer Roleplaying Opportunities

Combat Training/Duelling
This is your life. It is assumed that when not on missions, the Kill Team divides their time between meditating, praying, training, drinking (Space Wolves), and shitting - albeit rarely shitting, such is that near perfect digestive system. I want duels between Battle-Brothers to be a roleplaying experience for the fucking ages that will be remembered by all involved.

To emphasize on this I have thought of a system (that probably needs tweaking) to reward players for duelling one another in unarmed combat. Two players would meet in a dojo of sorts and square off - no armor, no weapons. They would throw unarmed blows (WS and S only - no talents or bonus skills allowed) and parrying would be allowed (even though normally parrying without a melee weapon is restricted). The first player to become Heavily Damaged (damage equal to twice your Toughness Bonus) loses.

Players can fight up to 5 times between missions. To do so, both parties post an interest in duelling in the OOC thread and I will set it up IC, or make a new thread for it. Winners gain 10xp/win. Losers gain nothing. However, if you lose more than two times in a row you lose 1 pt of renown. Now, this isn't like losing renown for shaming yourself or your Chapter as written in the CRB, which is a [b]BIG DEAL[/u]. This is more of a way to reflect the team ragging your ass for losing twice and hopefully will open up even more roleplaying opportunities.

Crew/Doomsayer Interactions

The crew of the Doomsayer are all highly trained and experienced in many fields. Creating and maintaining good relations with them, and getting in their good graces, may just allow them to open up to you more and provide you with insight on this or that.

How it works: Mingle. See who is who and attempt to find out about these characters. However, don't be surprised if some aren't immediately forthcoming; they are a tight knit group after all. Let's say you have your eye on a certain character progression for your PC and are looking over the various skills and talents available to you at your current rank. Send me a PM with what skill you would like to try and influence. I will tell you what PC to try and become buddy buddy with. If all goes well and after a period of time you end up on their good side, you then roleplay your sessions/talks/studying/interactions with them. If it is deemed sufficient by me, I will allow you a discount on whatever skill you previously PMd me about. This could take some time, but in the end should prove fruitful and worth it. And who knows what shenanigans you will get into through your interactions.

EDIT: For those of you who buy your Deathwatch Supplements, Fantasy Flight Games is having a massive Holiday sales event. More than half off on some products. Get it while the getting is hot. http://store.fantasyflightgames.com/client/client_pages/sale2013.cfm?catid=25

Oh god, how is a giant shoulder checking another giant into a wall "subtle?"

Hahaha! Happy thanksgiving, everyone!

EDIT: Combat Arena IC has been set up. This way, however long it takes to resolve a duel in real time won't hold up the team's progress in the main IC.

Fair point is fair.

Now I have to wonder if he PMd you IC and said all the stuff he wanted to about Leman Russ sodomizing Sigismund.

Gunter is going to be popular, I can tell. Like One Direction popular.

Isn't that why they're called 'Long Fangs'?

drumandfight

I feel like Gunter is one hate crime away from starting the "Emperor Hates Fangs!" march aboard the Doomsayer.

Fixxxer
Fixxxer's picture

Why would Gunter have something against drinking blood? o.O

As a side note, I just finished reading Nightbringer. I give it 8/10, the ending chapter 6/10 and the epilog 9.5/10. It gave me a very good primer as to how a space marine should probably act and think, so I very much recommend it to everyone here that hasn't read it. I'll start the next in the trilogy tonight.

Fixxxer

Also, Pax is down for sparring with anyone who wants a piece of him, immediately.

Haha

Pretty sure that's just, like your opinion, man.

Which I don't share. Which increases the size of my genitals.

The book that got me into 40k Lore. I am glad you enjoyed it. I plan on re-reading the Omnibus when I finish "Horus Rising." Reading about Astartes pre-Heresy is a completely different ballgame than reading about them in current lore settings. It is so tragic and fucked up. Good stuff. Highly recommend.

This shit got cray cray.

drumandfight

I figure we don't need a separate OOC thread for the combat arena. In fact, anything OOC can be handled here, or probably will be easier to just be posted at the bottom of the Combat Arena IC thread in brackets.

For example: blah blah blah swings at blah blah with the force of a thousand bull dykes.

[OOC: All Out Attack WS42+whatever+whatever]

At some point after I find my room I'll be making my way to what passes for a medical bay in on the ship. If there is any new medical research/ equipment/ anatomy or physiology research I'll be interested in looking for it.

You're aware there was a second Ultramarines trilogy about Uriel dealing with the stigma of being thought insane and unclean?

drumandfight

I've read the first four books. Not sure what's in the second.

I bought the ebook omnibus for my kindle. I think it is all inclusive.

Fixxxer
Fixxxer's picture

The original omnibus contains Nightbringer, Warriors of Ultramar and Dead Sky, Black Sun, as well as the short story that tells how Uriel took over as captain. The second omnibus contains The Killing Ground, Courage and Honour and The Chapter's Due, plus the short story Eye of Vengence and apparently a short comic strip as well.

drumandfight
drumandfight's picture

OK, yeah. I have them all then.

OH, you have got to read Storm of Iron before you read Dead Sky, Black Sun. It is related to the story in a completely different arch and I was very pleased to have accidentally read it prior to Dead Sky.

It is a great book and ties in well to the Ultramarine's story although it features none of the characters from it. DO IT.

Fixxxer
Fixxxer's picture

I'll see about picking it up, then. I'm only a couple of chapters into Warriors of Ultramar at the moment.

drumandfight
drumandfight's picture

I read it after warriors and before dead sky. So no worries. It's a nice break too.

Warriors has some sexy sexy action in it. I'm actually jealous I'm not reading it ATM.

It is so hard though (that's what she said)! At work, between classes I wanna update the game or read more to enhance daddy's knowledge. At home, I need to study Japanese (which I havent been doing), work out and then spend time with Aly so she doesn't punch me in the dick when I sleep.

But it is my mission.

A perilous one at that. I believe in you.

And believe me, I will punch you in the dick if you don't finish it.
