Message Hiccups

Something weird just happened. I was replying to a private message and hit "Preview" because I'm typing on a laptop and these things are fucking retarded. As an aside, how do you lock the bullshit cursor on a laptop so it doesn't keep moving around by itself while I'm typing and deleting everything?

Anyway, I hit "Preview" and it ate my whole post. Ok, fine, whatever. But I wanted to know if maybe it had actually sent instead of just previewing, which would still be a problem but still preferable to having to type the whole thing all over again.

So, no, it didn't send it, and I did need to type it all over again. But I clicked from tab to tab to double check if it had been lost in the shuffle, and my Inbox had been replaced with a bunch of random shit from the last two or three months. Nothing I had actually received was on the list; it looked like it may have been Matt's. There was a ton of stuff from Jeff about Deathwatch, and one conversation between Matt and Thomas about being eaten by a grue.

I went back to what I was doing and retyped the response to Crimison, and after hitting "Send," my Inbox had returned to normal. I just wanted to know if it had happened to anyone else or if anybody is aware of the issue. The private messages aren't really private if other people can read it, even if it's only by accident.

That's... really weird. *turns on the Talanall signal* (a giant spotlight that paints the night sky with a silhouette of a person beating another person about the head and shoulders with a hardcover book)

What an interesting bug!

I don't know what is causing it. Most likely, it is some kind of interesting interaction between the site's user ID system and its cache system.

If you have noticed that the site is loading pages faster lately, this kind of bug is basically the price exacted for that increased performance. I've been fielding all sorts of mild bugs of this nature for the past few days.

Do let me know if it recurs.

I don't think my comment needs a new topic, so I will just piggy back off of MI here.

Whenever I try to edit a post IC, it sends me to a "page not found" page. This has happened at my work and when I try to do it from my laptop at home. I am not sure what is going on.

Fixxxer
Fixxxer's picture

Crimison is also having the same problem as D&F. And I just read a post from Bahamut Omega where he expressed irritation at being unable to edit.

*Edited by Darker: It appears to be a permission issue, because as an admin, I can edit posts just fine.

I will investigate this bug. However, I am on vacation, and do not have reliable Internet access at the moment.

Until such time as I can find a solution to the bug, here is a workaround:
Upon reaching "page not found" result while trying to edit a forum post edit the URL in your browser's address bar.

Change http://dndarchive.com/forum/your-thread-name/99/comment/edit to eliminate the part between "dndarchive.com" and "/comment/99/edit"

This is a fairly complex bug, caused by our use of a forum, specific caching modules, and specific user permission settings in combination. Think of it as something like an unexpected interaction between random street drugs, if you want an apt comparison to a non-technical equivalent. Changing to a slightly different caching solution will likely clear it up.

I will seek an alternative cache solution, since the issue reared its head immediately upon implementation of caching.

As a note, I have not received MinusInnocence message. This makes me sad.

This is working brilliantly for me for the time being. Thanks for the reach-around, er, work-around.

What about now?

She's been waiting on a response to a PM she sent you regarding 2E, wherein she asked if the races from Expanded Psionics Handbook were on the table and whether or not you had a problem with some of the non-standard monstrous races that not have an ECL or have an ECL low enough that they could fit in with our 3rd-level group (orc, kobold, planetouched, etc.).

So, new spin on an existing issue. Crimison doesn't have the option to subscribe to a thread. It shows up fine on my screen, but there's no such button on hers. Also, since having followed the link Talanall gave her recently to make an end-run around not being able to edit, the EDIT tab is now open for her. Apparently the forum thinks she's a moderator with editing capability now. Heads up.

Crimison
Crimison's picture

All the moderator power buwahahah! For reals I miss getting email updates :(

Talanall
Talanall's picture

The lack of a subscribe button was my bad. Like an idiot, I forgot to enable the module for non-admin users. Should be fixed now.

As for the "Edit" tab . . . what thread is this happening in? All of them? Just a couple? It's totally expected that she'll see the tab if it's a forum thread or other content that she created. By default, the site is configured to allow authors to edit their own content.

Good question, and one that needs a little testing to answer fully. What I saw was that she was able to click the edit tab on one of D&F's Deathwatch threads. It was a thread she's posted in, but it was one of D&F's posts she was able to edit.

drumandfight
drumandfight's picture

The edit tab has disappeared for me... apparently the forum thinks I should not be able to edit my own game. This makes me all kinds of sad and oddly enough, horny.

Talanall
Talanall's picture

The access control permissions for the Deathwatch and Angels of Death forums were different from those for the rest of the boards. I switched them to mirror the settings for Ancestral Burdens.

Let's see if that closes the issue regarding ability/inability to edit posts there. The intended outcome is that everyone can edit his/her own posts, and the moderator for the forum can edit all posts, much as an admin can do.

If Crimison loses the ability to edit D&F's posts, and he regains said ability in addition to being able to edit hers, then we're good to go.

No such luck. I am still not able to edit anyone other my own posts in Deathwatch.

Fixxxer
Fixxxer's picture

I suddenly have a PM inbox full of random people's PMs that didn't include me in any way. O.o

Talanall
Talanall's picture

Yeah, this is the bug that Crim and some others have been experiencing on PMs.

At this point, I'm going to slowly recoil towards our old caching system, and see when it quiets these bugs. Expect a possible eduction in service quality on the site as a result of this. It's a necessary step; I ran a couple of diagnostics this morning and didn't get any useful answers from them, so we're gonna do it the hard way.

If the bugs go squish, then I'll slowly re-enable stuff until they come back, and that'll pinpoint the source of the issue.

Step one: I disabled a module that handles individual caching settings for different kinds of content. Lemme know if the bugs die. Tomorrow, I'm disabling the caching solution we currently use, to roll back to the site's default setting.

Wæs se grimma gæst Grendel haten,

drumandfight
drumandfight's picture

Step one: failure on my end. I still do not have access to edit posts other than my own within the Deathwatch thread.

Talanall
Talanall's picture

Okay, we're on step two. I've changed us back to the old caching method. If we continue to see issues, then step three will be for us to stop caching for people who are logged in. I am going to hold us here for several days to make sure there's time for people's browsers to refresh.

So I see two things at the bottom of the page that I never used to (but this started at least yesterday - maybe a few days earlier).

node_access entries for nodes shown on this page

node prio status realm gid view update delete explained
899 0 empty acl 22 0 0 0 forum_access/23: no users!

899 0 ok forum_access 5 1 1 1 blogger
899 0 ok forum_access 6 1 0 0 dungeonmaster

Under that is another table that keeps changing:

I've got this as well. But my PMs seem to be back to normal.

MinusInnocence

Everything is working fine for me right now, I think. Except sometimes the summaries for each sub-forum telling me how recently someone posted and how many new posts there are since my last visit are lying. It can lie both ways: sometimes it won't shut up about stuff I've already seen, and sometimes it knows about an update before the rest of the site, so I click on it and there's nothing there.

But that's a totally separate problem. And it isn't really a problem, it just means less for me to keep up with as far as I'm concerned.

The stuff Fixxxer and DDMW are seeing is a diagnostic that I activated to help me troubleshoot the bugs. It'll go away shortly.

The issue MinusInnocence and D&F noticed are just natural consequences of having caching enabled. It's basically cosmetic.

Yesterday I got a bunch of PM notifications. I don't think I got any NEW messages; these seemed to be a notice for each PM conversation I have currently in my Inbox.
