Maintenance and Upgrades

This thread is where the Archive will announce upcoming/recently completed maintenance and upgrades. This is NOT the place to ask for changes to how the site works. Questions about pending or completed changes are fine, but if you want the site's functionality extended, start a new thread in this same sub-forum, and explain what you want, why you want it, and how badly you need it.

Updates and Upgrades, April 24, 2016

Overdue maintenance cycle. Upgraded from Drupal version 7.22, to newest available version of Drupal 7, and added functionality to the site.

Details

  • Critical security fixes to the site
  • Updates to many add-on modules operating on the site.
  • Lost "reply with quote" feature on forums due to minor layout changes in the forum module and the quote module. Longer term, I will seek to reinstate this functionality, since it is nice to have. This is now fixed.
  • Updated die roller to engage bugfixes, and also to eliminate the need for a patch on the previous version. From a user standpoint, this is probably invisible.
  • Favicons added, per a request from Arkenian. There should now be an icon on browser tabs to make it easier for those of you who keep 20 or 30 of them open all the time to figure out which ones are for the Archive.
  • Added a username tagging feature, per requests from Fixxxer and MinusInnocence. If you put a user's name between pair of @ signs in front of it thus: (@ Talanall ), except without the spaces, the site converts it to a link to the user's profile page (@Talanall), and also sends that user an e-mail notification with a URL that will take him or her directly to your comment.
  • Implemented SMTP mail service for the site's e-mail messaging, with SSL baked in to encrypt e-mails during transmission. E-mail from the Archive is now fully secured.

As a side note, please don't abuse the user tagging feature. It sends an e-mail EVERY TIME you tag someone. So if, for example, someone were to tag drumandfight in multiple posts, he would get a separate e-mail message each time. It can get very spammy, especially if the user is also subscribed to the thread in which you are tagging him.

Some of us use our primary e-mail accounts for the site, which may also be a work account. So if you abuse this, I'll take it away and spank you. And it will not be the sexy kind of spanking.

There's a method of spanking that's not sexy?

Several. I could dress up as Woody Allen first, just for example.

Fixed the loss of the Quote button in forums. Should now work as expected.

Updates and Upgrades, April 25, 2016

Bugfixes, security upgrades.

Details

  • Per a request via @MinusInnocence, installed SSL/TLS encryption for browsing the site. All users are now forced to browse in HTTPS mode, rather than in HTTP, for privacy and security. Combined with SSL encryption on e-mail from previous update cycle, this gives the site end-to-end encryption for browsing and messaging. Vectors of attack are now via direct compromise of either your device/browser or the host server only.

Chrome users should now see "https:" in green before the site's address in the address bar. Firefox users should see a padlock before the address, with a yellow triangle overlaid on it because ads are served unsecure (Firefox notes this). Users relying on Internet Explorer have my pity and/or contempt, and should see a padlock to the right of the address before they go get a web browser that doesn't suck.

I can't speak for OSX users' expectations in Safari, and I have not checked in Linux, but I am fairly confident that HTTPS performs as expected there, too.

For those who are interested in such things, the SSL/TLS cert is a free one from https://letsencrypt.org/, which issues them for free. Dreamhost has a beta program that automates the certification process so that you basically click a button and make some settings changes to your site config. It took about 10 minutes. Highly recommended.
  • Patch applied on the Quote module, restoring use of the green QUOTE button on forum posts. Updating it from an old version broke the feature during the previous update cycle because the maintainers are lazy shits.
  • Bugfix for an issue causing a fatal error/white screen of death from visiting certain user pages.

MinusInnocence has experienced a bug pertaining to the EDIT button on forum posts. If anyone else has the issue, please take screenshots and bring it to my attention.

Kids ruin everything. Fucking squares.

Also, hooray!

Twisted fuck.

So here's a thing I'm noticing. Threads with a new post no longer seem to have a link that takes you directly to the newest post since your last visit. That was a useful feature.

Yeah, I'm also seeing the lack of this as well.

It's suppressed right now because I'm on a bug hunt related to it.

Ah.

The 'new post' is also buggy. Most forums show me two or so 'new posts' even if they haven't updated since 4/2. More details from my work computer later.

The best way to find new posts on the forum, currently, is from the top-level forum page. Choose the tab for "New and updated topics," and you'll get a list of threads that contain posts you haven't seen, from most to least recent.

The specific forum module we use (Advanced Forums) is known to have a lot of non-critical bugs of this nature. I opted to use it because it is a "glue" module that extends the basic forums provided by the bare-bones CMS we use, and it makes it easier for me to apply other software modules and make them work together.

The low-level bugginess does make me regret that choice, sometimes. It never breaks in a way that renders the site unusable, but it often lies about what is new, or it generates "View 2 new" links that point to the wrong content, or other things of that nature.

Most of the time, I try to be philosophical about the little ones, and save my energy for the real show-stoppers. Right now, for example, MinusInnocence experiences a funky bug that makes the "EDIT" button on the forum point to a URL that doesn't exist. So he can't use it. There's a workaround that lets him still edit posts, but it's a real pain in the ass and I'm trying very hard to root out the bug and squash it.

I would appreciate a 'remember me' option when you sign in. It appears I have to sign in each time I come to the site.

It's something to do with your browser; my logins persists across browser session even though I do not use a password manager or anything of that nature.

Are you set up so that your browser purges cookies every time you shut it down? That would cause the issue, if you are. I use Chrome for most browsing, with the recommended setting for cookies, which accepts them and does not purge them between sessions. Firefox has similar settings, although I am not as up-to-date on them because I use it predominantly for compatibility testing.

If you have a look, discover that this is the cause of the issue, and you can't or would prefer not to change the setting, then I am not totally opposed to the idea of adding a "remember me" checkbox. There is a module to do it, but login handling is fairly complex stuff because of its security implications, and I will be out of my depth if something goes wrong.

And security IS important here; this site is an infrequent but regular target of hack attempts.

Minor Update, May 6, 2016

Added fields to record Facebook, Google+, Twitter and Instagram profile URLs for those who want to share those with members of the site. Contents of these fields are visible only to admins and registered users. Anonymous visitors cannot see this data. For that matter, they already can't even see user profiles. See my profile for example usage. If you open this same page in an anonymous browsing window, you'll see it like anons do.

Please be advised that a minor update cycle will take place this weekend, probably on Saturday, July 6. I fully expect that it will be invisible to regular users.
