Early Afternoon, 5 Imogen, 973
Mbali, Rory, and Vexandi make a scouting foray to the plantation, but are interrupted by a patrolling trio of three skeletons, and they are forced to beat a hasty retreat.

100 XP awarded to Rory and Vexandi.

Evening of 5 Imogen, 973 IR in game.

The expedition bivouacs in the forest camp they have established WNW of Blackwell Plantation, and a stormfront moves through. During the ensuing downpour, a foraging pack of ghouls, led by a ghast, stumbles upon the camp. The party and the hobs fight off the ghouls, but not without losses; Rory Greenbarrow dies in battle, and Henrik Stonefist and two of the hobs also are grievously wounded. Virtually every other member of the rest of the expedition also incurs wounds fighting against the undead.

On the other side of the tally, the ghast and two of the attacking ghouls were destroyed, and most of the others were burned after Vexandi Iwu called upon a strange fire spirit, a magmin, to do battle against the monsters. The survivors have fled, evidently seeking easier meat elsewhere.

250 XP awarded to all PCs.

Noon of 6 Imogen, 973 IR in game

After Mbali and Rasnak verify that there are no major threats within the ruined kobold enclave that Rasnak used to call home, the expedition relocates there. They clean out the unburied bodies of Rasnak's slain kin, bury them, and set about gathering food and cleaning the cave to make it habitable again.

In the process, they discover that the clan's old shrine to Draklaknak is now haunted by a poltergeist. Vexandi opines that the spirit is neither powerful enough nor mobile enough to represent a real danger unless provoked, so he does not agitate for it to be the target of an exorcism or similar countermeasure.

With this done, the expedition settles in to rest and recuperate for the evening.

100 XP awarded to all PCs.

Night of 7 Imogen, 973 IR in game

Having endured a visit, the night of 6 Imogen, from a strange elf (or at least it looked like an elf) who claimed to have had a bargain with Rory, the party decides not to assist the Stranger with its desire to obtain a segment of bleak banyan wood. They rest undisturbed for a second night in Rasnak's ruined clanhold, and then spend the majority of the day resting, foraging for food, and undergoing treatment for injury and disease.

That night, they make their assault upon the necromancers. One of the hobs dies in the fighting, and Uluwasi is injured nearly to death before the necromancers are slain. The party disposes of somewhat less than half the skeleton laborers from the plantation before the death of the necromancers frees their overseers from servitude. The larger of the two, a flight-capable ogre, offers a truce in exchange for the party's lack of pursuit. The offer is accepted, and the battle ends with the large overseer's immediate destruction of his smaller comrade.

That night, Rasnak and Vandersrike spearhead efforts to strip the necromancers' corpses of useful goods, and also uncover a secret treasure room in the basement of the farmhouse.

Early Morning of 9 Imogen, 973 IR in game

The party encounters a plague of approximately five dozen rats foraging in the woods, but is able to circumvent them due to a combination of good listening and quick action from Leland Sparks, druid extraordinaire.

135 XP awarded to all PCs.

Evening of 9 Imogen, 973 IR in game

A swarm of Tiny and Small centipedes investigates the cavern where the PCs have set up camp, and tries to eat the hob on sentry duty at the cave's mouth. A fight ensues, and the centipedes are killed.

40 XP awarded to all PCs.

Morning of 10 Imogen, 973 IR in game

The party encounters a trio of minotaurs, led by Narg. Not trusting the bull-men's intentions, they try to avoid engaging with the three, but Narg turns out to have a sunny disposition and sharper-than-expected senses. He stops them to ask directions to the nearest "plantay shin," and discusses his upcoming trade with a strange fellow who sounds remarkably like the Stranger. Narg's Common leaves a lot to be desired, but it transpires that the minotaurs have agreed to fetch the Stranger some bleak banyan wood. In return, Narg believes that they will receive a "bees knees orange mint," which is apparently an alcoholic beverage of some kind. The PCs speculate that in fact the Stranger has offered a business arrangement that will result in paying Narg and company with some kind of spirituous liquor, and that Narg is just bad at words.

In any event, the PCs lead Narg and Company to the plantation, where the minotaurs are good enough at cutting down trees that the PCs recruit them as temporary muscle to assist in killing the bleak banyan orchard as quickly as possible.

357 XP awarded to all PCs.

Evening of 11 Imogen, 973 IR in game

The PCs finish a second day of killing trees, and the minotaurs say their farewells and lumber off into the sunset to bring wood to the Stranger and earn their bees knees orange mint.

On the way back to the cavern, the PCs disturb a cete of dire badgers, but Leland again shows his worth by defusing the encounter before it can turn hostile.

176 XP awarded to all PCs.

Afternoon of 14 Imogen, 973 IR in game

Having nearly returned to Zeno, the PCs are hampered by fog, as well as a concurrent encounter with a disgusting hybrid of spider, mollusc, and insect that they later discover is locally known as a "slitherweb." Although the fog and the creature's unfortunate advantage in mobility conspire to prevent them from killing it as they would like, they are able to wound it seriously enough that it breaks off its attack and flees for its life.

53 XP awarded to all PCs.

Evening of 14 Imogen, 973 IR in game

The PCs return to Zeno keep and are debriefed by Lady Zeno, Master of Horse Dorn, and Court Magus Dilmer. Confiscated goods from the plantation are turned in for appraisal and the tabulation of daily pay, survivors' benefits, and prize money.

The PCs receive offers of employment from Master of Horse Dorn and Court Magus Dilmer.

Quest completion award for assorted non-combat challenges, roleplay, etc.

955 XP awarded to all PCs.

All PCs receive 26 silver pieces for daily pay.

All PCs receive 2,700 gp in prize money.

PCs accepting Master of Horse Dorn's offer of employment swear fealty to the Marchioness of Zeno, and receive two suits of livery (treat as a traveler's outfit in terms of weight, but it prominently displays the colors and badge of the March of Zeno and would be difficult to sell to law-abiding folk within the March).

All PCs reach 3rd level. Current XP total for all PCs equal to 3001 XP.

Midmorning of 17 Imogen, 973 IR
The party tracks a slitherweb through the swamps and temperate rainforests east of Zeno, and for its efforts nearly follows the creature into a dryads' grove. They never actually see any of the fey, but by immediately heeding the dryads' warning-off and through a judicious bit of sweet talk, they get a clue that helps them continue their pursuit.

50 XP awarded to all PCs.

Mid-afternoon of 17 Imogen, 973 IR
The PCs successfully locate a nest of slitherwebs, and do battle with them. Three out of the five creatures lie dead after the fighting, including one specimen the size of a horse. Victory doesn't come cheaply, though; Johten Ward also perishes in the battle, and both Leland Spark and Gazini suffer life-threatening injuries.

788 XP awarded to all PCs.

While lingering to patch up the wounded, collect the dead, and rig up a drag with which to extract the slitherwebs for Dilmer, Henrik wades into a pond to search for valuables among the many corpses that have been dragged in as food for the largest of the slain slitherwebs. He finds a motley assortment of things that may be valuables and may be junk. Further examination, cleaning, and appraisal may yield insight.

  • a holy symbol of the House of the River (negligible weight)
  • a carved bone or ivory statuette of a nude female dwarf (2 lbs.)
  • a metallic comb set with iridescent white stones (¼ lb.)
  • a rotting leather sack filled with coins, (24 lbs.)
  • a tube of lead foil, sealed on the ends with wood plugs and wax (negligible)
  • a wooden tube, likewise sealed on the ends with wax (negligible)

Additionally, he discovers that the pond has become a hatchery for what the PCs currently believe to be slitherweb eggs. The PCs fashion a makeshift container from one of Swarbrick's waterskins and collect a sample, guessing that Dilmer may want to examine them and pay extra for their initiative.

Evening of 17 Imogen, 973 IR
The party returns to Grimilon Keep with the eggs, the largest slitherweb, and Johten's corpse. After a debriefing, they're dismissed to bathe, eat, and rest, leaving their loot for Dilmer to appraise. Results below.

  • a holy symbol of the House of the River (negligible weight, 40 gp)
  • a carved ivory statuette of a nude female dwarf (2 lbs., 40 gp)
  • a silver comb set with white opals (¼ lb. 900 gp)
  • a rotting leather sack filled with 1,200 silver coins (24 lbs.)
  • a tube of lead foil, sealed on the ends with wood plugs and wax (arcane scroll of darkvision and enlarge person, negligible, CL 3rd, 175 gp)
  • a wooden tube, likewise sealed on the ends with wax (divine scroll of death knell, gentle repose and silence, negligible, CL 3rd, 450 gp)

All items except the statuette were liquidated. Shares come to 176.56 gp per character for all members except Armund, who receives no share, and Henrik, who appropriates the statuette and a lesser share of 136.56 gp. All PCs except for Armund also receive 50 gp as a bonus from Dilmer because of their unforeseen thoughtfulness in acquiring a sample of slitherweb eggs.

Imogen 19, 973 IR
After a failed assassination attempt against the Marchioness of Zeno, the captured assassin, a mad being that identifies itself as Porp, is remanded to the PCs' custody and sent to the dungeon. After he's interrogated and the castle has been swept for other threats, Master of Horse Dorn and Court Magus Dilmer conclude that they need more information about Porp and his backers, and that the PCs are the most trustworthy assets that they can spare to conduct an investigatory journey.

The party leaves Grimilon Keep for the lands of the Marchioness's feudal tenant Athyen Enburn, Baron of Mamor. The weather is foul, delaying their departure for Mamor, but Leland, Swarbrick and Armund all expect worse to come, so they take advantage of a break in the weather to make the trip to the hammlet, and arrive at around noon, just as another line of heavy thunderstorms blows through. After a delay for lunch and a little information-gathering, the expedition feels as if they know what general area to search for traces of Porp's brethren. The delay stretches out as the worst part of the storm manifests with a terrible display of lightning and wind, but once the danger has passed, they return to the road.

Their travels are interrupted in the late afternoon when, as they pass through a section of dense forest to the southeast of Mamor, they have a chance encounter with a group of hungry bothrians. The PCs sustain injuries, a few of them serious, but in the end they kill or drive off the tentacle beasts.

Each PC receives 964 XP.
