Chapter 1: Harvest (OOC)

Out-of-character chatter for housekeeping, discussions about the progress of the game, etc. goes here. During combat, actions and dice rolls are to be posted here, and echoed by the DM after being resolved.

Will we be starting in a place where we can begin some IC interaction? Not meaning to jump the gun, but I'm looking forward to getting into character and I imagine some of the others might be, too.

Talanall
Talanall's picture

Yes.

Is this where I ask if I sense any spirits within the tiny 15ft radius we're standing in at the bailey?

Talanall

Evidently it is.

There are none at the moment.

Have y'all seen Avatar? I imagine Vexandi's accent to be like that of the Na'vi, minus all the hissing and growling.

Do any of our burly competitors have anything valuable and loosely attached? A pouch or two, perhaps?

Not that Vanderstrike can see. They're all geared up like they're going on the march.

We'll pretend Leland's question came before Dorn arrived, and that Dorn's announcement cut off the discussion.

Knowledge: Nature check on those trees.

I rolled 1d20+8, the result is 8, 8 = 16.
Talanall
Talanall's picture

Leland's knowledge of the bleak banyan tree is essentially the same as what Dorn has told you. The only thing Dorn missed is that the trees are probably pollinated by some kind of territorial wasp.

Darker

Well if we are doing knowledge checks...

Checking knowledge religion for info on these various undead we might meet. Knowledge history for any mention of the cartel history in the area. And Rasnak may get a circumstance bonus having seen some of these creatures first hand.

Knowledge (religion), Knowledge (history)
I rolled 1d20+6, the result is 15, 6 = 21.
I rolled 1d20+3, the result is 6, 3 = 9.
I rolled 1d20+6, the result is 12, 6 = 18.
I rolled 1d20+3, the result is 5, 3 = 8.
Darker

Should mention, the first roll +6 is the knowledge check, the second +3 is a lore check for the same question/research topic.

Talanall
Talanall's picture

So that's +6/+3 religion/lore, then +6/+3 history/lore?

Wæs se grimma gæst Grendel haten,

Darker

Yes.

Talanall

Rasnak is aware that the majority of undead used by the cartels are bog standard zombies, normally raised from the corpses of whoever is unfortunate enough to be kidnapped by or sold to the cartels. The overseers that Dorn mentioned are some sort of advanced form of undead, and he doesn't know much about how they are made; that's a mystery that lots of people would like to solve.

The short of it is that overseers retain some degree of intellect and personality, which is entirely different than most simple undead, and they are able to exert the same basic kind of control over mindless undead as evil clerics can, essentially commanding their obedience. He thinks that it would be really dangerous if something released one from its master's control, since that would mean an intelligent undead would be running around loose, able to command the obedience of other undead.

The history of the cartels is an awfully broad area of discussion, but Rasnak is at least aware that the cartels have been operating in Enteria for a couple of human lifetimes. The God-King and God-Queen kill every cartelist they can lay their hands on, and "death to the cartels" also seems like the mantra of every other nation on earth. But their product is so desirable that people still tempt death growing the trees, brewing the wine, and smuggling it for sale outside of Enteria. It's also incredibly lucrative, and the money flowing into the cartels' hands is increasingly making them a law unto themselves anyplace that isn't directly under the eyes of a crown loyalist like Belda.

As a kobold, Rasnak has only the faintest inklings of political life among humans and their allied races, but he gets the sense that the monarchs of Enteria have a much harder life because of their inability to put down the cartels and keep them down. He thinks it probably makes them look weak.

Is there a name for the rainforest where Vex is from?

Talanall
Talanall's picture

I'm sure it has one, but I haven't bothered to figure out what it is. By all means, choose one. The Aureshan Empire is mostly built on an Italianate/Latinate nomenclature, if you are concerned about consistency of style.

Ok. "Succisus est saltus" is Latin for impenetrable forest. So...the Forest of Succis? The Succis Expanse? Hmm.

Talanall
Talanall's picture

I like Succis Expanse.

Wæs se grimma gæst Grendel haten,
mære mearcstapa, se þe moras heold

Talanall
Talanall's picture

I still like the name, but (now that I have gone back to check a couple of times) succisus actually means "felled." It's a participle of succido, "to fall."

Google Translate is cribbing (incorrectly) from the Vulgate Latin of the Prophecy of Zachariah. "Ulula, abies, quia cecidit cedrus, quoniam magnifici vastati sunt: ululate, quercus Basan, quoniam succisus est saltus munitus."

"Howl, o fir tree, for the cedar is cut down, because the magnificent are laid waste: shriek, oaks of Basan, because the walled forest is felled."

Wæs se grimma gæst Grendel haten,
mære mearcstapa, se þe moras heold

deadDMwalking
deadDMwalking's picture

All the more reason to keep the name. After the forest was razed a hundred generations ago it was replanted and the elves vowed that never again would they let their vigilance lapse and they redecorated themselves to its defense.

Edit - my phone changed 'rededicate' to 'redecorate'. I know I use some uncommon words, but 90% of its 'corrections' are mistakes.

Talanall
Talanall's picture

Maybe. I'll let Spoons decide.

Obsidian_Spoon
Obsidian_Spoon's picture

Well, seeing as it's not exactly Latin, and it's not exactly the full spelling of the Latin word anyhow, and I kind of like the way the name "The Succis Expanse" sounds and rolls...and I've already said it in-character...If you're ok with it staying, I'm ok with it staying.

Talanall

Okay, at this point I'm going to ask people about their order of march.

It seems from the IC thread that Vandersrike, Henrik, and Leland are walking more or less together, possibly with Vex nearby. Is that right?

Mbali and her retinue are at the vanguard of your little column, except for the four hobs she put on duty as the rearguard. Figure out how you're arranged in between them. The road is about 15' wide, and unpaved. It's just gravel and dirt packed together by traffic.

I rolled 1d20, the result is 6 = 6.

My rolls below are Listen THEN Spot, because it makes no sense to do it the other way. None at all.

Until she made her request just now in the IC thread (which I erroneously checked before this one), Rory was content to linger near the middle of the pack. If she isn't actively scouting ahead, she wants to be as protected as possible.

Listen, Spot
I rolled 1d20+5, the result is 10, 5 = 15.
I rolled 1d20+5, the result is 18, 5 = 23.

Rasnak gravitates toward to the largest group of people that can protect him. He'd likely try to surround himself with the hobogoblins up front, traveling in the back of them in middle of the road with someone on either side.

Obsidian_Spoon
Obsidian_Spoon's picture

Vex is content to be nearby the three mentioned above. He was gonna linger back and speak to Rory, but that'll have to wait until whatever is resolved, I imagine.
