Chuul will leave the party after he gets Marta on her way. Garren is welcome to join him, if he's done here.

Garren will do so.

As nearly as I can tell, Oskav now has two spells remaining to copy out, at which time he will have completed his planned spellbook expansions. 12 Verdil, 973 IR was the date of the ball, and I'm going to rule to the effect that he lost the day to fitting for his costume, etc., except that he had enough time to finish up some copying that was interrupted by his attendance at the premiere of a play.

I believe that most of you will have noticed that the XP and Rewards thread has updated.

Here's the updated List-o-Things You Guys Want to Accomplish. Strikethrough indicates a completed item. Green items are in some sense ongoing. Items in grey are in need of player input. Red items are failed. If something listed below is wrong, please let me know as soon as possible.

  1. Introduce Arkady and his children to the Temple of Derena, in support of charitable treatment for Rodion's and Yana's exposure to the curse of lycanthropy.
  2. Scry on Cole, if possible with the assistance of Temple-Warden Geddan Burke.
  3. If practical, arrange to provide official notice to the government of Port Hope concerning the Incident at Morville.
  4. If practical, provide notice of confirmed goblin and kobold activity between Morville and Golden Sheaves in the period immediately following the Incident.
  5. If practical, provide assistance to Jalen in authenticating himself at court.
  6. Figure out your next move in your ongoing feud with Cole.
  7. Make an expedition into the wilderness of the northern moors to visit the fortress of the night hag Zoratadya.
  8. Attempt to draw Berger Cole into coming to you, by beginning The Bone Necklace (see the subheading under Hail to the King, Baby).
    1. Search Port Hope for fragments of the Bone Necklace. Obtain as many as possible.
    2. If possible, assist in the spread of rumors that you have possession of at least one necklace fragment.
  9. Sell your loot.
  10. Buy gear in support of #7 and #8 (and possibly #11, below).
    1. Sallet of assimilation (Avar).
    2. Sir Fluffernutter (Chuul).
    3. Spells for Oskav (purchase and copy): (0) stinking cloud (no purchase needed, copy only from Gallielle's book in trade for access to haste), (2) invisibility sphere, (4) magic circle against evil, (5) protection from energy, (3) sleet storm and (1) slow. Numbers indicate priority.
    4. Commission water-producing item for Oskav (approx. 5 uses/day, 1 gallon/use). Possibly contingent upon going into desert.
    5. Scrying mirror (Garren).
    6. Apply silver to +1 guisarme (Chuul).
    7. 6x scrolls of create water, 2x scrolls of purify food and drink, 2x blessed bandages, everlasting rations (Alannah) Possible substitution for partially consumed wand(s). Some or all items possibly contingent upon going into desert.
  11. Traverse the eastern deserts to find Fafrilla's mother and enlist her help with Toil and Trouble: Zoratadya's Prison and/or The Worm of Hatred: Running Home to Momma.
  12. Protect Marta Meel from the consequences of her father's arms deals with the northern orc clans as a result of his involvement in Masters of War.

Assorted and miscellaneous tasks.

  • Mobilize Port Hope for military intervention against the goblinoid menace, per Goblinoids on the Warpath (Alannah, Chuul, Garren)
  • Assure the reabsorption of Mereflow Province into the Aureshan Empire, per La Reconquista (Avar).
  • Prevent the reabsorption of the Archduchy of Port Hope into the Aureshan Empire, per La Reconquista (Alannah).

  • Be a guidance counselor for Rodion (Oskav).
  • Lift fey debt (Avar).

Oskav is tapped out in terms of discretionary funds after he finishes transcribing spells into his spellbook, so the idea for the everfull canteen or whatever we were calling it is going to have to wait. For this reason, his preference would be that we don't spend any time in the desert anytime soon.

And if he could rank things he would like to do before he dies, talking to more wizards about casting spells and arcane research is probably near the bottom of the list right now, since that's all he's done for a week and a half. If the rest of the party wants to leave town before he gets a chance to introduce himself to any local wizards' guilds, that's just fine by me.

Alannah is no longer interested in this one -- Write to father, care of Jalen (Alannah).

Now that her half-bro has taken Jalen under his wing... or the other way around... or whatever, Jalen has whatever in he was hoping for into the nobility of port hope. Plus, did Jalen pony up his portion of the treasure in exchange for her help? Doesn't matter, the help has been complete.

Also, it should be noted that Alannah is much more interested in #11 than #7 and would actually like to continue #8 as a first priority, by traveling to meet up with the nomadic halflings, as one of her leads says that one of the leaders of the halfling tribes is a likely candidate for a piece of the necklace holder.

Alannah will explain this all of asked. Oh, who am I kidding, Alannah states her preferences loudly and often every chance she gets. Though she does want to explore the ruins of Zoratadya's fortress, she wants to learn more by visiting the dragon and the library that was mentioned that the dragon has, as she has it under good authority, there may be more informatnon on night hags there, which would be good to find out ahead of time. Also, she points out that she has a lead that the halflings have a piece and if Cole comes back looking, he could very well get the same lead and then all those halflings gonna be dead if no one is there to stop him.

Noted. I'm not surprised. She didn't really want to write anyway, as far as I can tell.

Jalen doesn't really have what he was looking for, which was authentication of his identity in a formal setting. The debacle at the ducal court kind of burned that down for him, and Alannah's brother is a very distant second-best.

In any case, he and Alannah never really settled on a deal. She pawned the whole thing off on her brother instead, and who knows what kind of arrangements Boromil made. Maybe that's how he got the money he gambled with to raise enough to buy his colonelcy.

I think that #11 probably is going to be a hard sell with Chuul for so long as Berger Cole is still alive, because it's the to-do item that is most likely to have the Bastards out of position to restart hostilities with Cole as soon as he returns to the mortal world. I can't speak to how the rest of the party would react, although my impression is that Garren also has both personal and professional reasons for pursuing the matter as a high priority.

Insofar as she might have an ally in her campaign to steer into the desert, I guess that'd be Oskav, of all people, just because the library in Vifrilidaxas's safekeeping may contain spells or something that he'd want to acquire. But as Mike just commented, Oskav is kind of tapped out financially right now, so getting prepped for a desert expedition may be expensive enough to outweigh the opportunity, especially if he also has to reason with Chuul in the process.

The idea of sticking around the interior of the Mereflow Valley seems pretty important to several different projects the Bastards have going, so I think she'll have better luck arguing in favor of prioritizing #8 over #7. Obviously, Chuul is going to want to do that anyway. It'll be interesting to see how his decision-making processes function, if Cole is ever confirmed to be dead. Right now, "I favor whatever seems likely to hasten death of that perfidious werewolf, Berger Cole," is basically his default answer to any question more involved than a query that seems more complicated than his meal preferences.

You'd be correct. So far as Chuul is concerned, the plan was to gather up the piece of the necklace and to let it be known that we have them. Anything that deviates from that without a good reason (meaning a reason that seems like an obviously quicker or better way of accomplishing the goal of Chuul getting a werewolf skin rug for his living room) is going to make him react... poorly.

From a strictly OOC vantage, I'll point out that since Chuul is pretty much willing to do just about anything to get Cole, Alannah could almost certainly convince him to check out this night hag's fortress by telling him she has a lead that part of the necklace is there. But she'd have to be okay with lying to Chuul and knowing that her lie will almost certainly come to light eventually.

I'm hoping to find that out some day myself. Chuul's pretty much operating on righteous fury and intense hatred and letting that influence his decisions (mostly) within the confines of his moral structure. Without that driving him to constantly decide to do whatever hastens the day when he gets to drink from Cole's skull, I'm very curious to see how he goes about deciding on what is and isn't right, or even interesting to him.

We'll find out when Cole is dead.

There's always the possibility that you guys could actually go into the Spirit World after this dude. I'm not really advocating it in any way, but Chuul has already been there once and lived to tell the tale, and it's worth pointing that out in case his patience begins to fray.

I understand that the Bastards are trying to force Cole to come to them for a change, because chasing him has not given satisfactory results in the past. But sometimes it's worthwhile to make sure everybody is on the same page, so I'm underscoring the fact that you still can, in fact, chase him.

Anyway, I'll give the list until morning for people to chime in, and then we'll proceed. Some new developments are waiting in the wings, and I don't want to hold things up for very long with bookkeeping and planning.

Actually, you hit on the exact reason that Alannah wants to delay going to Hagland funpark. She believes Cole's ancester left the hag with the necklace intact. Cole Sr. went nuts with the evilness and had to be put down after the hag was defeated, likely from the hag's dying (or imprisoning) curse. So, she is pretty sure the necklace wasn't broken until later and therefore no necklace pieces would be left in the Hag's fortress. Though a trip she is very interested in taking, she's now found one piece of the necklace and proved its real (and realistic to find them) and wants to find more.
