Chapter 14: Visionaries (OOC)

This is the OOC thread. You know what it's for. Here's a List-o-Things You Guys Want to Accomplish. Strikethrough indicates a completed item. Green items are in some sense ongoing. Items in grey are in need of player input. Red items are failed.

  1. Introduce Arkady and his children to the Temple of Derena, in support of charitable treatment for Rodion's and Yana's exposure to the curse of lycanthropy.
  2. Scry on Cole, if possible with the assistance of Temple-Warden Geddan Burke.
  3. If practical, arrange to provide official notice to the government of Port Hope concerning the Incident at Morville.
  4. If practical, provide notice of confirmed goblin and kobold activity between Morville and Golden Sheaves in the period immediately following the Incident.
  5. If practical, provide assistance to Jalen in authenticating himself at court.
  6. Figure out your next move in your ongoing feud with Cole.
  7. Make an expedition into the wilderness of the northern moors to visit the fortress of the night hag Zoratadya.
  8. Attempt to draw Berger Cole into coming to you, by beginning The Bone Necklace (see the subheading under Hail to the King, Baby).
  • Search Port Hope for fragments of the Bone Necklace. Obtain as many as possible.
  • If possible, assist in the spread of rumors that you have possession of at least one necklace fragment.
  • Sell your loot.
    • Georgie claims anklet of translocation, loses acrobat boots.
    • Chuul claims ring of sustenance, acrobat boots and a potion of bull's strength.
    • Alannah claims hammersphere. Individual sale of +1 light crossbow, 6 bolts, 4 silver bolts.
  • Buy gear in support of #7 and #8.
    • Spells for Oskav (purchase and copy): (0) stinking cloud (no purchase needed, copy only from Gallielle's book in trade for access to haste), (2) invisibility sphere, (4) magic circle against evil, (5) protection from energy, (3) sleet storm and (1) slow. Numbers indicate priority.
    • Commission water-producing item for Oskav (approx. 5 uses/day, 1 gallon/use). Possibly contingent upon going into desert.
    • Scrying mirror (Garren).
    • Apply silver to +1 guisarme (Chuul).
    • 6x scrolls of create water, 2x scrolls of purify food and drink, 2x blessed bandages, everlasting rations. Possible substitution for partially consumed wand(s). Possibly contingent upon going into desert.
  • Assorted and miscellaneous tasks.
    • Seek and join an arcane society (Oskav).
    • Be a guidance counselor for Rodion (Oskav).
    • Lift fey debt (Avar).
    • Write to Father Dearest, care of Jalen (Alannah).

Avar would have mentioned it on the way to the temple that he has news to share regarding the truthsaying of Jalen. He will want to tell others of the meeting as well.

    Darker

You want to share OOC as something they should know IC?

And also, Garren is a no lube, dive in with pants still around ankles kinda guy, isn't he?

    Talanall

No kidding. He didn't even buy Burke dinner first.

I don't think you can gently work up to 'and then the town was completely destroyed'. My kids will often try to tell a 20-minute rambling story and I have to say 'tell me what the point is first, then you can tell the full story'.

    Board Rider

I was hoping to recap the meeting at the church before going to the church of Derena but Tal moved forward. Essentially, Avar will share that Jalen has been scheduled for a truthsaying ceremony at the Church of the Blind. If Garren doesnt want to get into the Jalen issue he doesn't need to. His choice though.

There is more that we can cover IC.

I went back over transcribing spells from someone else's spellbook in the SRD. It takes pretty much all day for one spell no matter what level it is; so what will likely happen here is that Oskav won't make any progress on his little side quests at all and won't be able to shop for additional spells, either. Stinking cloud will have to suffice, especially if we're leaving ASAP. If that means going to the desert, before Oskav cozies up with Gallielle over hot cocoa and s'mores to swap spells all evening, I'll put the order in for the magic waterskin. All depending on how this conversation with Burke plays out, I guess.

Depending on what happens in the next little while, Oskav may actually wind up having plenty of time to copy spells. Six days is a long time, but it's not like other members of the party don't have business in town.

The process of selling all the stuff you've got as loot and then buying goods off the shelf is probably going to eat a few days.

The party still has most of the day ahead of it, so we're going to hit the fast-forward button for a minute and say that they spend that time selling off their loot.

Chuul gains 677 gp, 05 sp, a ring of sustenance, acrobat boots, and a potion of bull's strength (CL 3rd).

Georgie gains 1,527 gp, 5 sp, loses acrobat boots, and gains anklet of translocation.

Darker has already done Alannah's bookkeeping. Well done, him. It looks like MI has already done Oskav's, also.

Avar gains 2227 gp, 5 sp.

Please go ahead and update your character sheets to reflect these acquisitions and totals. I realize that several of your characters are planning to do some shopping before you leave town, but this is a convenient moment to get you all squared away individually.

Updated Chuul's PC sheet to include selling of loot and the night's food, lodgings and libations, which I hadn't done yet.

    Darker

A thought came to me recently about the water needs and all.

So we need so much water because of the desert environment. But in this case, wouldn't endure elements bring our (and possible our mounts) requirements back down to a reasonable level? In addition to just looking at items that could produce water, I also took a look at items that generated an endure elements effect and listed the cheap options for anyone that might want to consider these.

So, of course there's scrolls, potions, and wands -- all 1st level spell x 1st level caster (as it last 24 hours for a 1st level caster). But there's also a few items as well.

A least armor crystal of adaptation cost 500 gp and provides endure elements as a constant effect. A magic bedroll provides it when sleeping (maybe partially reducing the water requirement), but also allows the recovering of 1 additional hp/level while resting and also cost 500 gp. And an Enduring amulet also provides a constant protection endure elements effect plus comes with 3 charges a day that allow you to gain both fire and cold resistance (scales up from 10 points depending on how many charges you expend). The resistance as an immediate action, so I'm assuming you can use it anytime in the round, but likely not in response to an action (but I'm a bit unclear there -- how much time is between a dragon inhaling to take a breath and then breathing out?).

    deadDMwalking
    deadDMwalking's picture

Also - if we do end up traveling in the desert, we may want to join up with a caravan. That might help with some of the issues.

    Talanall

Sadly, any caravans would be traveling orthogonal to your route.

Garren is quite sure that the lady is a sluagh. Those are almost always aligned with the Unseelie Court but otherwise he's drawing a blank.

Alannah feels certain that Cole must be in the Spirit World, rather than in some more exotic plane that lies further away from the mortal world. The lady's clearly sluagh, and Alannah shares Garren's certitude that this probably means that she's Unseelie. Nasty as they are, they're still fey, and so they reside in the Spirit World proper rather than in a hell or heaven. If she were inclined to gamble, she'd wager that Cole is somewhere cold, rocky and/or windy; that would be normal for the demesne of a high noblewoman of the Unseelie Court.

Are Spirit Shamans a thing in Port Hope? Can we find someone that can reliably call fey into this world to treat with?

    Talanall
    Talanall's picture

They exist, but most are better at dealing with incorporeal undead or aligned outsiders because those congregate where mortal populations are higher. Most fey are skittish of mortals, so it's hard to reach them from a city.

Dealing with fey would involve getting one to head far enough into the countryside to contact a suitable fey to either negotiate directly or serve as a go-between.

Just realized -- Though Burke likely has a sizable bonus to his wisdom and thus a higher DC on the will save for the spell, he hasn't mentioned actually meeting with Cole... so though Cole gets -10 on his will save because of that, he gets +5 from the second-hand knowledge. Alannah, having met Cole would give him the same -10 but with no bonus, because she has met him. Therefore, Alannah should actually be able to scry Cole better. Unless Burke is rocking a 26 wisdom or more (which is totally not unreasonable).

As a follow-up question, once someone scrys a subject, does their knowledge change to first-hand?

And one last question to the group -- should we try to locate the dragon through magic? Seems like getting a scry off would be pretty damn hard. Is it worth trying.

    Talanall
    Talanall's picture

Burke's Wis score is 24. He used greater scrying, which is a Clr 7 spell, netting him a DC of 24.

With the aid of the blood sample (-10 to Will save), Burke's secondhand knowledge of him (+5 to Will save), and the need to scry across a planar boundary (+5 to Will save), Cole's net Will modifier was his normal saving bonus.

Alannah's DC would be 16 with scrying, but Cole would be at a -5 penalty because she has seen him firsthand. So her net DC is 21.

If Burke used the same spell as her, they'd be equivalent. He's still a more powerful spellcaster, but she has some experiential advantages for this target that he doesn't.

    Regarding scrying, first-hand knowledge, etc. . . .

Scrying on someone does not make for first-hand knowledge; that's something you can only obtain by actually having met and observed the person directly and without impediment. So if it's too dark, noisy, foggy, for you to have had a good view of the subject, or if the subject were disguised by some kind of illusion that you hadn't already penetrated, etc. you haven't "met" the subject.

If we want a common sense ruling, I think it's fair to say that there also needs to be some level of intimacy or interaction. If you saw Al Capone from across a nightclub's dance floor, you didn't meet him. It's loud and smoky, so you can't actually hear him or smell him, and you didn't talk to him or otherwise interact with him. You saw him in person, but you didn't get to EXAMINE him.

If you'd actually spoken to him and had him speak to you in return (other than for something really brief and impersonal like a transaction at a convenience store), then I'm sanguine about the idea that you've met him. Or if he stabs you (or tries to), then yeah, I guess that counts. I mean, at that point you haven't been formally introduced, but fair enough. Otherwise, I think that if you spent a few minutes observing him from a distance of less than 20 feet, then we're talking about circumstances that would count as having met him for our purposes, since that's close enough that there would be no substantial penalties to your Spot skill.

Exceptions to this rule include the empathic link between an adept, sorcerer or wizard and his familiar, or between a paladin and her mount or a psionic character and his psicrystal (but not the link between a ranger or druid and an animal companion) confers the same level of familiarity as if the master had directly observed a person, place, or thing.

A homunculus's link to its creator also provides this level of connection.

What you can do with scrying (much of this pertains to any effect with the [Scrying] descriptor) is this:
    1) Scry for unknown but specific people, at a +10 bonus to the target's Will save bonus, provided that they have some connection to you. Example: "The individual who stole my wallet" or "the person responsible for spreading rumors that I've taken an orc as my lover," but NOT "the nearest pirate vessel operating on the Mereflow River."

    2) Establish "secondhand knowledge" of individuals under 1), above, or of any other extraneous individuals viewed through scrying.

    3) Establish the preconditions for someone (either the caster or an observer) to create a valid likeness of an individual for the purpose of imposing a -2 penalty to future Will saves against your scrying attempts.

    4) Cast legend lore or vision under the "detailed knowledge" conditions of the spell, with regard to a person, place, or thing that you have observed while scrying.

    5) Cast sending to reach a creature that you have observed via a scrying sensor.

Knowledge (the planes) is pertinent, and may qualify you for some insight about the planar locale where these events are transpiring. The benefits of your Planar Axiologist feat are not applicable here, however, because they apply only to Outsiders with the Good subtype.

Given that you are viewing this scene through a scrying sensor, your options for direct interaction with the environment shown are extremely limited. Detect secret doors won't work through a sensor, and neither will see invisibility (which Gallielle doesn't have prepared right now, anyway). They augment only what you can perceive with your own eyeballs.

There's a resemblance that could be familial.

    Talanall

I spent quite a bit of time thinking my way through this decision, trying to think what Cole could possibly do to make Chuul hate him even more. "Watch your nemesis shag the living daylights out of an entity that plausibly has been worshiped as a goddess, after you have been involuntarily celibate for a couple of months" was the winning idea.

Alannah believes that the elf is not an elf at all, but a changeling. There are lots of stories that deal with changelings, most of which get things wrong by suggesting that faeries sneak into mortal homes, steal their babies, and leave changelings behind in their place. Alannah knows that in fact, changelings are fey who look like their humanoid parents.

Less common than the "faeries stole my baby" tale, but still far from rare, are stories dealing with the Halfbreed Knight. Alannah doesn't know if these are all tales of the same individual, or multiple similar individuals, or what. But the basics of this tale involve the changeling living with its fey parent, and eventually rising to a position of importance at the local noble's court. Often the local noble is in fact the changeling's fey parent. Anyway, mortal tellings of these tales usually have a lot to do with the changeling's rise by merit; usually the young halfbreed is uncommonly brave or cunning (or both), skilled in trickery or the arts of war, and he rises from a position of humble obscurity as a servant to become a knight of the court.

Very often, Halfbreed Knight stories involve a romance with a mortal woman, although the "romance" can be anything from an actual love story, to the abduction of a questionably willing maiden who's unfortunate enough to catch the Knight's eye when he goes riding in the mortal world.

Full-blooded fey usually are condescending at best and hostile at worst with respect to changelings, and the Unseelie are especially nasty. So Cole's choice of address for this individual probably is an insult that also happens to be factually correct. And probably, he's delivering this calculated insult to someone who is very capable of hurting those who cross him.

Chuul duplicates the parts of Alannah's recollection that have to do with the nature of changelings. Like her, he knows the information discussed through the link in her results. He's missing the subtext provided by her bardic knowledge, in terms of what it might mean to be a (or THE) "Halfbreed Knight."

Avar conjectures that the Halfbreed Knight is a retainer of Nicotiana's, and probably of some standing in her court. The Aureshan Empire doesn't have duchies (the Imperial equivalent is a satrapy, but they aren't feudal). Enteria is a feudal kingdom, however, and Avar knows something of them because they're the Aureshans' neighbors.

From that baseline, Avar can extrapolate that a fairy duke or duchess would rule a large territory, with vassals and retainers (vassals being individuals who've been granted control of a lesser share of territory in exchange for their loyalty, and retainers being individuals who are members of their liege's household). Although vassals are technically higher in rank and receive precedence at social functions, Avar realizes that retainers often are more capable and have much more actual power. He doesn't see any reason why that would be different for fey than it is for mortals.

So he thinks that it's pretty likely that he's watching someone who is further up the food chain than, say, Marchioness Hyoscama. The Halfbreed Knight, whatever his actual name is, undoubtedly holds lower social standing than the marchioness (because he's either a landless knight or a baronet, which is like a knighthood but hereditary and with land holdings). But Avar suspects that the Knight is a more important person in terms of how bad it is to have him as an enemy.
