For centuries, Thur was one of the largest true nations in the world, eclipsed in size only by the Zymian Empire.  The nation’s population was not as large as many, but the census takers never counted the orcish slaves as people.  The people of Thur had kept orcs as chattel slaves for longer than their history had been recorded.  They were considered property and someone owning an orc could do whatever he wanted with them.  Diplomatically, this was the reason the Empire had little to do with Thur.  The dwarven nation of Tholldan was particularly disgusted by the practice of such cruel slavery and refused to extradite any orcs that escaped into their borders.  When a furious Thur sent a small army into Tholldan to press the issue, they sparked off the Great Imperial War (which many Thurzians still call the War of Moral Oppression). The war did not go well for Thur.  Most of the nation’s people saw their cause as just and saw the Empire as an oppressive outside nation trying to dictate moral policy to them.  After three years of nearly constant fighting, Thur was on the verge of convincing the nation of Pichu Tah to enter the fight on their side when the worst happened.  The orcish slaves, seeing an opportunity for freedom, had finally had enough and they rose up in rebellion, killing many of their oppressors.  Thur pulled many of her armies back to help put down the rebellion, but that left an opening for the Imperial forces.  The war was over not long afterwards.  Thur’s surrender to the Empire came at a heavy price.  They had to give up nearly half their land as a new home for their former slaves.  Many Thurzans would happily have that land back and see the orcs in chains or dead, even today.
