Mon-Gaar is a relatively young nation.  It’s actually more of a conglomerate of several city-states that have banded together under a mutual protection treaty.  With this in mind, most Mon-Gaarians don’t consider themselves Mon-Gaarians unless they are dealing with outsiders (often jokingly called “Non-Gaarians”).  Instead, a Mon-Gaarian generally introduces himself by the city-state he is from.  Laws differ slightly from city-state to city-state, and Mon-Gaarian politics can be quite convoluted, and are almost entirely based on rival families trying to open new markets and routes of trade.  In Mon-Gaar, whoever has the most successful business has the biggest say in local politics.

To many outsiders, the people of Mon-Gaar might seem aloof and proud of themselves and their high standard of living.  The truth is that much of northern Mon-Gaar used to be a nearly uninhabitable jungle.  A combined effort of several merchant families looking for resources and more open land allowed the jungle to be cleared back very quickly, with significant hardship on the part of the Mon-Gaarian work force.  Many up and coming merchants have taken to recycling this idea and have tried to clear land on several of the large islands surrounding Mon-Gaar, which has put them into violent competition with the nation of Kobukia for domination of the local land.
