As a child, Karen Stellsen endured the privations of constant travel among the rest of her family, in one of the halfling caravan families circulating through the plains region east of the thorp of Winterhome. Unfortunately for young Karen, her father was prone to gambling and drinking while in Winterhome each year, and his debts finally surpassed his luck. Faced with the prospect of being killed by irate creditors, he instead yielded up his child in an indentured servitude contract. Karen was only eleven years old.

The next five years of the young halfling's life was one of hardship that made her past wanderings with the caravan seem soft by comparison; Karen woke before dawn to sweep the stableyards of the merchant who held her indenture, mucking out stalls, hauling water for the animals inside, and running errands for the stablemaster. She grew up a wild, boyish thing, and on her sixteenth birthday she fled from her indenture into the criminal underworld of Port Hope, where she learned to forge papers, troll the city's taverns and houses of ill repute for rumors, and to slip unnoticed through the shadows of its alleyways. Young Miss Stellsen found that she rather enjoyed her new lifestyle, especially since her newly-acquired talents as a smuggler, spy, and forger afforded her enough money to eat decent food, and to wear clothing that was not made of old feed sacks. Within a short time, she saved up enough money to return to the yard of the merchant who still held her indenture, and buy herself out.

Her time in his service had been sufficient to teach her the basics of handling a wagon team, and with the proceeds of her criminal activities, she soon set herself up as a "respectable" businesswoman, with her own stable, wagons, and teams of oxen to haul them. Within a short time, her unique blend of business acumen, intimidation, bribery, and diplomacy proved sufficient to catapult her up the ranks in the Teamsters' Guild, and finally put her in charge of the entire organization.

Concurrent with the growth of her reputation as a legitimate businessperson, Karen also enjoyed a rise in her prestige within the criminal world of Port Hope, especially once she began to act as a facilitator for large sales and movements of stolen goods and other contraband. This loose association has gradually solidified into the Velvet Purse, wide-ranging criminal group which acknowledges Karen as first among its members.
