Master Josiah Brewster arrived in Golden Sheaves almost 50 years ago, trailing his father Hosiah, who sought work as a brewer under Fafrilla's mother. After his father succeeded in procuring a position with the Gleaming Talon brewery, the young gnome found himself in a position to grow up with the facilities as his playground. An innately mischievous streak often led him to play pranks on the business's staff with the aid of his racial spell-like abilities, and he also developed a fondness for scampering about on the catwalks and ladders which made it possible to maneuver in and around the maze of vats, sluices, and ducts which made up the working equipment of the brewery. Eventually, youthful grace lost out to treacherous footing during one of the young gnome's adventures, and he fell from a catwalk when a safety railing gave way. Upon his recovery, he walked with a limp and showed a new fear of heights. Fafrilla's mother gave him a ring of feather falling which he still wears, assuring him that it would bring him luck to keep him safe on the catwalks, and it has since saved him from more than one potentially fatal spill.
Josiah also began to develop a friendship with Fafrilla at this time, since the young dragon first began to venture into the brewery just before his accident. The difficulty he experienced in making her succumb to his pranks drove him first to distraction, and then to admiration. After almost a decade, Fafrilla decided to reveal her true nature to Joey, finding it difficult to maintain her deceptions in the face of his deep respect and affection. He took it surprisingly well, and it was only a month or two before he was willing to speak to her again. Since then, their friendship has strengthened, and the pair are close enough that many of the village's other inhabitants, unaware that Fafrilla isn't a gnome like Josiah, now wonder why they haven't married.
Following the retirement, and then the death, of his father and of Fafrilla's mother, Josiah began to take a more active role in running the brewery, showing a natural aptitude for the production of ale and beer, coupled with an expertise in the craft of brewing, distilling, and winemaking which was acquired almost by accident through the course of his youth. Lately, Josiah has taken to experimentation with more exotic methods of brewing, and has begun to incorporate alchemical processes into the brewery's production, hoping to increase shelf life, add new flavors for sale to clients with unusual tastes (like adventurers), and to improve the color and clarity of the brew.
