Infected Template

The infected once were normal people, but now they are something else. Having been infected with a strange disease called “rage sickness,” these formerly ordinary people are now hate-fueled killing machines that hunt down living for no reason but to beat them to death with their bare hands. Any resemblance to the person an infected used to be is gone after the moment he becomes infected. His features twist into a hate-filled grimace and he bleeds from the mouth and eyes. The infected don’t respond to any attempt at conversation except to attack the speaker, and they never speak except to utter unintelligible screams of rage and hate.

No one is sure when the first infected came to be, although it’s universally accepted that rage sickness is not a natural disease. It incubates immediately and cannot be overcome naturally. Many theorize that the disease is fiendish in origin, but no one has ever discovered for sure. Once contracted, rage sickness takes effect immediately, turning the victim into an infected. Once infected, the victim is driven only by rage and hate and will do nothing save hunt and kill living things. If it is not killed, an infected will eventually die of dehydration or starvation, as hate consumes its mind so completely that it doesn’t recognize the need to take food or water.

Creating An Infected
“Infected” is an acquired template that can be added to any corporeal giant, humanoid or monstrous humanoid creature (referred to hereafter as the base creature).

An infected uses all the base creature’s statistics and special abilities except as noted here.

Size and Type: The base creature’s type and size are unchanged.

Hit Dice: Same as the base creature.

Speed: Same as the base creature.

Armor Class: Same as the base creature.

Attack: An infected retains all the natural attacks of the base creature and gains a slam attack and bite attack if it didn’t already have one.The bite attack of an infected is a secondary attack. An infected never uses manufactured weapons of any kind.

Damage: Infected have slam attack and bite attacks. If the base creature does not have these attack forms, use the appropriate damage value from the table below, according to the infected’s size. Creatures that have other kinds of natural weapons retain their old damage values or use the appropriate value from the table below, whichever is better

Special Attacks
An infected retains all the special attacks of the base creature except for spellcasting, psionics, or any special attack granted by a class progression, and gains those described below.

Batter (Ex): When making a full attack using only slam attacks, an infected may make an extra attack in a round at its highest base attack bonus, but this attack takes a -2 penalty, as does every other attack made that round.

Infect (Ex): An infected is a carrier of a disease, rage sickness, and may spread this disease to others. If an infected successfully pins an opponent, it may use a standard action to make a bite attack, potentially spreading its sickness. The victim must make a successful Fortitude save (DC 10 + half the infected’s HD + the infected’s Constitution modifier) or become an infected 1 round later.

Special Qualities:
An infected retains all the special qualities of the base creature except for spell-like or psi-like effects and gains those described below:

Enraged (Ex): An infected is permanently affected as though it were in a barbarian rage. It gains a +4 bonus to its Strength and Constitution scores (already factored below) and a +2 bonus to Will saves and suffers a -2 penalty to Armor Class. An infected may not use any Charisma, Dexterity or Intelligence-based skill, the Concentration skill or any abilities that require patience or concentration, nor may it cast spells, manifest psionic powers or utilize magic or psionic items of any kind.

Scent Infected (Su): An infected has the scent ability, but it only applies to other creatures with infected blood. Any effect that suppresses odor masks the scent of infected blood from an infected’s ability to scent it.

Single-Minded (Ex): An infected is immune to fear and mind-controlling effects, including spells from the enchantment school and psionic powers from the telepathy school. It always attacks the nearest living thing except for other infected without regard to any danger to itself. It may bash its own brains out trying to get through an iron door or burn itself to a crisp charging through a wall of fire to get to its prey, which it will pursue tirelessly so long as it can see, hear, or smell it.

Abilities: Str +6, Con +8. An infected is a feral creature and as such, its Int and Cha scores are reduced to 3.

Skills: Same as the base creature (but see enraged above).

Feats: An infected gains Diehard, Endurance, and Power Attack as bonus feats.

Environment: Any, usually same as the base creature.

Organization: Solitary, pair, horde (3-5) or mob (6-15)

Challenge Rating: Same as the base creature +2.

Treasure: Usually none.

Alignment: Always chaotic evil

Advancement: -

Level Adjustment: -

This creature might be human, but it’s difficult to tell under all the blood it’s covered with. With a feral scream, it launches itself at you, arms swinging wildly long before it reaches you.
