Level: Rgr 4
Components: V, S, M, F, XP
Casting Time: One Hour
Duration: 23 Hours and Instantaneous (see below)
Spell Resistance: None
By focusing on an object belonging to one of his enemies, the ranger is able to gain insights on the creature, better enabling him to combat his foe. Casting the spell requires the ranger to perform a ritual which takes one hour to complete. The material component is part of the ritual and is expended even if the spell is interrupted. Upon completion, the ranger selects an individual who must be the owner of the item being used as the focus for the spell and must also belong to a creature type which corresponds to one of the ranger’s favored enemies. The ranger receives a +5 insight bonus to spot, listen, survival and sense motive, but only when using these skills to detect something about the target of the ritual. This portion of the spell has duration of 23 hours.
Secondly, the ranger learns about the creature’s resistances and weaknesses. The ranger knows to what energy types the creature has resistances or immunities, what type of weapons penetrate the creatures DR and if the creature has spell resistance. The amount of these qualities is not revealed, only their presence. The spell does not reveal these qualities if they are a result of the creature’s equipment.
Finally, the caster gains an intuitive sense of where the selected individual currently is located. The general direction (given as a cardinal, ordinal or intermediate direction) and an estimation of distance (rounded to the mile) of the target becomes known to the caster from his current location. This effect can not be avoided by effects that prevent detection.
Material Component: A variety of chalks, oils and rare extracts worth a total of 500 gp.
Focus: An object belonging to the selected individual or a part of the creature’s body (includes hair and nails).
