Half-Elf Fighters

The half-elf below is designed to emphasize the half-elf's adaptability. As much as humans, the half-elf is supposed to be able to thrive in any situation. To this end, the half-elf fighter thrives by being able to do an adequate job at almost anything.

Ranged combat is the half-elf fighter's weakest point because I opted not to give any special feats to improve that aspect of this build. But at higher levels, this NPC rides an extremely unusual mount which makes up for a significant chunk of its ranged deficiencies: a griffon. At extremely high levels, this mount has also been advanced by HD to improve its survivability. The overall effect is that this NPC is capable of horrifying amounts of damage via mounted charge attacks that allow it to spend minimal time in melee range.

Matters don't really improve if you manage to force this NPC to stay in melee range and trade full attacks with you; even dismounted, the half-elf fighter can be imposing, since it wields a rather hefty magical scythe. Whirlwind Attack means that even if this NPC is subjected to an attempt to swarm it under, there's a very good chance for it to water the battlefield with its assailants' blood.

The chink in this NPC's armor, as with any fighter, is its Will save. This NPC is more resistant to enchantment effects than a human, but a determined effort to turn it against its friends can succeed, at least partially. Since this NPC eventually rides into battle atop an intelligent mount, this makes it somewhat less likely that a lucky dominate person spell is going to force the half-elf fighter to use mounted charge attacks on its own allies. But such spells are still an excellent way to gum up the works for this NPC.

To maximize the benefit of this NPC, arrange for encounters to take place out in the open, where its mounted attacks can deal the most damage. This is also a really excellent NPC to use as the leader of an enemy army, since Whirlwind Attack, Cleave, Great Cleave, and the griffon mount's Pounce attack combine to make this NPC terrifically good at carving apart low-level NPCs. A single round's attacks by mount and rider combined can reduce up to 23 NPCs to pink mist. For ordinary soldiers, it's a matter of hundreds or even thousands dying before this NPC can be swarmed under in melee. In a big set-piece battle, the half-elf fighter offers an excellent incentive for the PCs to get involved as more than generals.
