Physical Appearance and Personality

Baroness Elspet stands five feet tall, with hair so blonde as to be nearly silver, pale gray eyes and a slim physique, all of which are gifts of her elven heritage. The result is a colorless sort of beauty which belies her fiery temperament and makes her one of the leading figures of Enteran social scene. The elf woman accentuates her icy good looks with finely tailored silks, platinum and diamond jewelry, and a minimum of cosmetics. Combined with her charisma and force of personality, her impeccable taste has made her one of the trend-setters in the capitol of her adopted nation despite the clearly Aureshan accents of her speech.

Starting Attitude: Indifferent.
Modifiers: The PCs are members of a bleak banyan cartel (-4), the PCs are retainers of the House of the River (-4), the PCs are retainers or members of a noble house (-2), the PCs are members of the Imperial secret service (+2), the PCs include a talented musician, artist, actor, craftsman or scholar among their number (+2), the PCs are members of the Church of Corones (+4), the PCs include a cleric of Corones among their number (+4).
If Hostile: Openly attempts to block the PCs' efforts to execute their plans, possibly going so far as to have them abducted, stripped of key memories using modify memory, and then deported from Enteria.
If Unfriendly: Arranges to have the PCs watched. She may subtly hinder their plans if they appear in opposition to her agenda, or if the PCs give the impression of being evil or ruthless in their methods.
If Indifferent: Socially expected interaction, with a slightly friendlier tinge than normal for PCs who are obviously natives of the Aureshan Empire. She makes idle conversation if it is acceptable for a ranking noblewoman to do so in public; otherwise, she politely disengages from conversation with her social inferiors.
If Friendly: Arranges introductions at court, provides advice about Enteria's culture and politics, gives warning of hidden dangers stirred up by the PCs' actions.
If Helpful: Offers low-level work on missions, ostensibly for herself but actually for the Imperial secret service of the Aureshan Empire. Provides access to safe houses, limited supplies, clerical healing from the Church of Corones. After several successful missions, may offer the PCs entry to the Imperial Spy prestige class with members of her retinue providing necessary training in spycraft.

Elspet is many things. Some are obvious—she is a scholar, a fine singer, a fearsomely perceptive and subtle negotiator, and the widow of an Enterian nobleman. Others are hidden. For example, she maintains a network of agents as a spymaster in the pay of Aurelon V of the Aureshan Empire.

The fact of her employment in the Imperial secret service is a matter of the utmost secrecy, since she reports directly to Aurelon's head spymaster via the weekly use of dream. The baroness uses her network of informants to maintain an unusually good knowledge of current events and intrigue in the aristocratic circles of Enterian public life. She gains influence by dispensing her information and favors to select nobles in exchange for "donations" to the Church of Corones.

Although the Godson is ordinarily held in reverence by the skilled craftsmen and professionals of the Aureshan Empire's lower and middle classes, Elspeth plays upon her deity's connection to art and technology, acting in cooperation with a cell of especially militant Coronar clergy who provide aid to runaway serfs from the countryside. In due course, she and her comrades in the League of Truth help the runaways to fashion new identities as tradesmen and merchants with their own businesses.

Slowly and carefully, the Baroness is building the rudiments of an urban middle class in the city of Entera. She intends that they will seize power when the country (inevitably, as she and the Aureshan Empire's best political and military thinkers consider the matter) falls into a civil war between the bleak banyan cartels and the House of the River.

Baroness Morendrel is mostly a behind-the-scenes player when she deals with adventurers. Though intermediaries, she often funnels money, information and supplies to PCs who act in favor of the interests of the country's serfs, peasants, artisans or scholars, or who merely demonstrate an aptitude for embarrassing and inconveniencing her fellow nobles.
