Create a Leader (questions)

This thread is intended for questions, answers, smack talk and base jokes about people's mothers, heritage and sexual preference. Submissions posted here will not be judged. But said posters will.

@Fixxxer, I wanted to make a comment about your mother in the Quarantine thread, but I was feeling that it would just cross the line into creepy. But we're there now, so let me just say that I hope both your mother and stepfather make a fully recovery. In the event that your stepfather DOESN'T pull through, I will ask your mother to marry me. Being able to make the two of you call me 'Daddy' will fulfill every dream I have left except winning this competition.

Long story short, I'm IN - this competition and anything else anyone here will let me.

My stepfather is reportedly doing much better. Mom says she has "a cough," but says she's feeling fine otherwise. So there's that.

Funny semi-related story. Through the oddest twist of fate, my father ended up marrying my best friend's sister, seventeen years his junior I might add. This technically makes my best friend my uncle. It's a fact he rarely lets me forget.

Have you reminded him that your dad is screwing his sister?

Darker

That escalated quickly.

I told him once that she was gonna end up pregnant (not likely in reality, by way of vasectomy) and that he wasn't going to be as special to her as her new child. I know how to hit where it hurts.

I have written it before on some version of this forum and I will write it again...I love you guys.

So I've gone a bit braindead and have a few questions regarding the crunchy stuff that I likely would have known then answer to eight years ago when we did these with some regularity. I *think* I know the answer, but maybe the answers might help out others as well.

1. How should we determine ability scores? Elite Array? Point buy?
2. For equipment, should we be looking at PC or NPC value to determine what loot the leader might have?

Fixxxer
Fixxxer's picture

Huh. I thought we had a sticky thread about this, but I'm guessing it was on a much earlier iteration of the forums. Let's go with 28 point buy for ability scores and NPC values for everything else.

The old laptop is dead. Long live the new laptop.

I didn't have anything entry related backed up (but that's about the only thing I lost - and I should be able to retrieve it), but with getting everything configured I'm going to be hard pressed to submit.

Darker

If you don't submit, I'm going to win by default!

One day left, everyone!

Darker

I just wanted to say thanks to @Fixxxer and @MinusInnocence for putting this contest together. It's been fun and just what I needed to lift up my spirits a bit. And for @Talanall and MinusInnocence getting their games back up and running. I've been in this group for over 10 years and having some normalcy from our pre-pandemic days just feels good. I know all of us have been going through hard times and have been pretty busy with family, school, work, and everything else that has all piled up, but I really appreciate everyone here, whether you are running a game, playing in one, or just lurking around to make a snarky comment every once in a while. We may be separated and scattered all over the globe, but I value every one of you. I'm talking about you @Board Rider, @deadDMwalking, @Cronono, @drumandfight, @HVB, @Aladdar, @Obsidian_Spoon. And all our other forumites that have moved on ... maybe one day they will find their way back home.

Flattery will get you everywhere! Alas, I already finished grading the entries.

Well, then you can go ahead and announce my victory!

Obsidian_Spoon

Wait. I was not informed of a contest. Or anything, really, other than the two games starting back up. And thank you, Darker, for at least mentioning me and making me aware of the loop that I wasn't brought into.

Sorry I've been AFK for ages. Work is maddeningly busy right now, there's the pandemic, the insane Texas freeze, and my own health issues in the way.

Darker

Well, @Obsidian_Spoon, I think that is a valid reason for us to have another one!

That's an interesting idea. @Talanall, is there a way for us to subscribe to an entire sub-forum so we get notifications when a new topic is posted?

It depends how you want the notifications.

This website's software automatically generates RSS feeds for each forum. To get to that, browse to the top-level page for a given forum, then scroll down and look for this icon: Subscribe to RSS - Contests and Competitions. So for the Contests and Competitions feed, you would look at https://www.dndarchive.com/forums/contests-and-competitions. The icon there will give you a URL that goes like this: https://www.dndarchive.com/taxonomy/term/22/feed.

If you want an RSS feed that just sucks up every post that is made to any of the forums here, then try https://www.dndarchive.com/forums/feed, and that should give you what you want. It won't give you all the comments, but I think that's probably a good thing.

If you want to follow an individual forum post, then we have a nice shiny subscribe button for e-mail. I don't really have a good way to provide for an RSS feed for comments; RSS is meant for lower frequency than is really typical for an active discussion thread.

If you already use a feed reader, then this is an easy solution. You take the URL for the feed(s) you want, paste into your feed reader, and you're done. Most readers fetch new content about once every 15 minutes.

I use a feed reader, because I follow a lot of different blogs, comics, web serials, etc. I use Feedly, because I can load the app on my phone or have it open in my browser on my PC, and it all syncs up. I think I currently have 70-80 feeds that I watch, and it has definitely been a life-changing solution.

I'm pretty sure Darker consumes RSS feeds, too, but I don't know which reader he uses.

If nothing will do but to get it as an e-mail message in your inbox, then there are various RSS-to-email services, including free ones, out there. I've had relatively recent, positive experiences with both Blogtrottr and Feedrabbit, and they both have free tiers of service that would be able to handle the likely amount of email generated by this site. Another option is a service called Zapier, which again has free tiers of service and will automate things like RSS-to-email, on a very finely configurable basis.

I also use Feedly for similar reasons to fill all my RSS needs. I used to use my own home page with RSS splicing code that I wrote, but Feedly just does it better and already is mobile accessible right out of the box.

We could start a Competition Announcement Thread - if people subscribe to that, they'd receive a notification of the new competition when they are announced.

Done. However, I don't have admin privileges to sticky a thread outside of 2EE, and this one should probably stay at the top of the sub-forum.

It's stickied. I love that people are interested in future competitions. It'd probably be worth it for people interested in judging the next one to announce their interest and start discussing amongst themselves what the topic and competition parameters should be now.

Darker

Yes! I require new competitors to defeat!

Is there anyone planning on organizing and judging something in the upcoming, or should I take the reins?

MinusInnocence

I have an idea but need some time to iron out the details because it's something we've never really done before. I will help you judge whatever you want this month.

That sounds good to me. Who’s going to compete?

deadDMwalking
deadDMwalking's picture

I think I have something to prove foe the next one...

Darker

... that you are a solid second place competitor?

deadDMwalking

There could be five competitors. I could come in dead last.
