Buuuuuut.....if Rex is going to be honest, he may as well be compensated.

I rolled 1d6, the result is 4 = 4.
Fixxxer
Fixxxer's picture

The second roll was Rex spending a Clue token to add a die to the roll?

Board Rider
Board Rider's picture

Oh. No. I thought a 5 or 6 was a success. Did I get that wrong? If it's a failure then Rex will not spend a clue to reroll.

Fixxxer
Fixxxer's picture

A 5 is a success, but since 1 success in this challenge equals nothing happens, then when you rolled a second time, I assumed you were trying for the multiple successes needed to be able to draw a new item card. Or was the second roll for something else?

Board Rider
Board Rider's picture

I read that wrong. For some reason I thought I could roll again even though I had only one die to roll. Sorry for the delay. Just the one success then, no clues for the second roll.

Fixxxer
Fixxxer's picture

Fair enough. Meanwhile, @Aladdar, here's Norman's browsing items at General Store.

Aladdar
Aladdar's picture

Norman will take the saber. He plans to roll into fights with guns and swords ablazin'.

Fixxxer

Alright, we're back in Upkeep. Need slider changes and Movement Phase actions from @MinusInnocence, @Aladdar and @Board Rider, as well as a Retainer roll from Aladdar. Mandy is gonna head directly to Marsh refinery. She can almost certainly take out the Child of the Goat, but more importantly, she wants to access the gate so she might close it.

Things are looking grim. We're at 5 open gates, and can have a maximum of 7, so we've got to close some gates, and fast. We're also at the monster limit in Arkham, so monsters that spawn are gonna start filling up the Outskirts, which will eventually result in the Terror Track advancing. Plus, some of those monsters are pretty badass. Innsmouth isn't looking a lot better than it did last round. Also, the Ancient One's Doom Track is more than halfway full, so the citizens of Innsmouth have declared Martial Law and become more hostile to outsiders (us). For the rest of the game, any Investigator ending his or her Movement in an Innsmouth street or Location must make an Evade check modified by the number shown on the board for that area or be arrested. Further, unlike being arrested in Arkham where you're only delayed, Jail Cell is an Innsmouth Location that you draw encounter cards for, and there are potentially some nasty things that can happen there. On the plus side, Investigators in the Sawbone Alley Location can attempt a jail break to free jailed Investigators.

If I had to suggest a tactic we all ought to employ, it would be to get to a gate as quickly as possible, whether you can seal it or not. We've got a very finite amount of time before the sheer number of gates probably loses us the game.

Gloria will drop her slider to Speed 2/Sneak 2, move to the Train Station, pay the fee and end up at... where does she end up again? Is it the Bus Station?

She is going to beat the shit out of those nerds waiting for her. Her body is ready.

Fixxxer
Fixxxer's picture

Yeah, it'll be Joe Sargent's Bus Service. The Cultist is a little pussy Gloria will flick away like a fly. The Black Man is no joke, though. Make sure you're ready for him, as his ability is "succeed at every roll or get devoured forever."

Board Rider
Board Rider's picture

Fight slider up 1 to 3. Rex will move to the Newspaper but will most likely fall facing the monsters upon his first move. Can I get the 3 monster cards please?

Can I get clarification on his card? Because that's not what the card on the board says.

If I have to make a Luck check, as the card suggests, maybe I should only move my Speed down 1 and also lower Lore by 1.

Aladdar
Aladdar's picture

What does the Elusive characteristic mean on the Serpent People card above me? Trying to decide if I need to fight him or whether I should sneak to the gate.

Fixxxer
Fixxxer's picture

Elusive means that it will always avoid a confrontation unless you initiate Combat. Effectively, against a monster with the Elusive ability, you never have to make an Evade roll and only have to make a Combat roll if you want to fight it.

Aladdar
Aladdar's picture

Gotcha, are we better spent by me taking out the monster or trying to close the gate? I'm thinking the gate?

Fixxxer
Fixxxer's picture

The gate for sure. Even worst case, we've got a few rounds before the Terror Track raises enough to close important Locations, but we've got as little as 2 rounds (maybe even 1 round, if the Mythos is particularly unkind) before we get hosed by the number of open gates.

There's a good chance you're right and Rex will get hosed by this combination of monsters, so it's important to think about how he wants to face them.

The Elder Thing is the big-bad of the group. He can hit your Sanity really hard, and failing your Horror check against him will rob you of a weapon or a spell. That said, Rex has a skill that effectively lets him auto-succeed a failed Horror check for the cost of 2 Clue tokens, which Rex does have. It might be worth it to try and tackle the Elder Thing first for that reason. If you fail the Horror check, you can pay the Clue token cost to activate Rex's skill and pass it instead, and the Elder Thing doesn't negatively modify a Combat check made against it, although it does require two successes to kill it.

The Child of the Goat is a relative pussy. You don't need a Horror check and it actually adds +1 dice to your Combat roll. So it might be worth it to tackle it first. The drawback is that if you fail in Combat with it, you get delayed, but since Rex's Stamina is at 1 anyway, I don't think it's a real concern.

The Yithian is the real wild card of this group. Because of Rex's Fight setting and the Yithian's modifiers, it's technically possible to defeat it, but highly unlikely, as you'll roll 3 dice and need 3 successes. However, its special ability might well lend Rex a kind of out for this situation. If you fail a Horror check against the Yithian, it'll deal 1 Sanity damage, but then you'll be Lost In Time and Space, which means you leave the board and go to the special Lost In Time and Space area and lose a full turn, but then you get to pop back into Arkham/Innsmouth wherever you want to.

What I'd suggest for Rex this turn would be to set his Fight/Will slider to its highest at 4/0. Wade in and try to take out the Child of the Goat first, since it requires no Horror check. After that, I'd try to take out the Elder Thing, remembering that you can pay 2 Clue tokens for automatic success on what will obviously be a losing Horror check. If the Elder Thing is defeated, I'd place it on Rex's Soul Gem instead of taking it as a trophy. Then I'd initiate combat against the Yithian, knowing that he'll lose the Horror check. He'll take 1 Sanity damage and become Lost In Time and Space. In a perfect world, he takes out 2 monsters and can later pop back somewhere that either heals Sanity or has a gate, and can utilize his Soul Gem for healing Stamina at the first Upkeep after he ceases being Lost In Time and Space.

Or something.

Board Rider

Ill try option 3. CoG first and slide Fight 1 more.to 4.

I rolled 7d6, the result is 4, 4, 4, 4, 1, 3, 5 = 25.
Board Rider
Board Rider's picture

Elder thing. 2 clues for Horror Check.

I rolled 6d6, the result is 1, 4, 4, 2, 2, 5 = 18.
Board Rider
Board Rider's picture

Spend final clue for combat roll.

I rolled 1d6, the result is 3 = 3.
Board Rider
Board Rider's picture

Oh boy.

Aladdar
Aladdar's picture

Lower my speed to 2 and on my turn I'll walk right past the serpent people as quickly as possible and head for the black cave.

Aladdar
Aladdar's picture

I'm confused on your rolls (@BoardRider). I'll let Fixxxer look them over. But I don't think those are proper. A few thoughts.

1. There's no horror check required on the Children of the Goat. I'm not certain if you get to spend the clues to add the 1 success to the roll, although I might be wrong. Either way, it's an automatic success and you only have to do it after the initial roll it appears if you can use it. So you'd roll 6d6 first and then if needed you'd spend the clues.

2. On the Elder Thing you're spending two clues to get extra rolls for the horror check since the -2 leaves you with an automatic failure? You only need one success if I remember right, so you could roll 1d6 using one clue and then roll another clue if needed I think? Either way, at best you'd only get two rolls for the horror check, not 6 like you rolled. It looks like you skipped the horror check and went straight to the combat check maybe?

Board Rider
Board Rider's picture

Here is how understood it and the rolls.
1. No horror check required so I didn't spend clues or die rolls. I went right to combat so I rolled 7 dice. 4 from contact, 1 from the card and 2 for the Ritual Blade. Looks like Rex succeeded and defeated the Child of the Goat.
2. The way I understood Fixxxer was that spending 2 clues allowed Rex to auto succeed the Horror check. So I went right to combat rolls. 4 from combat and 2 from Ritual Blade. Looking at it again I guess using the clue for the additional roll was pointless as I only had one success and having one more wouldn't have mattered anyway.

Either way, I think Rex is down due to lost stamina and the Ritual Blade is gone too.

Board Rider wrote:

It would have, as the Elder Thing only requires 2 successes (opposed to the Yithian, which requires 3 successes).

I was confused by your rolls too, but your explanation of them checks out. That said, Mandy is gonna use her special ability to let Rex reroll. He gets to reroll all the dice that didn't result in a success, including the one added by a Clue token, so roll 6d6 and hope for 1 success.

If successful, he'll kill the Elder Thing, but will still need to deal with the Yithian as part of his action this phase.

I am ready to proceed with Gloria's Movement phase when we address this. I just don't want to get smoked because I didn't know what I had to roll.

Man, I'm getting tired of the "first unread post" button skipping posts. Sorry about that, I'll start backtracking to check and make sure I'm not accidentally skipping anything in the future.

I also stand corrected about the monster card's text. I was momentarily confusing The Black Man with one of the other mask monsters on the board, The Skinless One.

Board Rider
Board Rider's picture

Reroll vs. Elder Thing. I am not sure if I would still get the +2 from the Ritual Blade since Rex failed a combat check. Feel free to drop 2 rolls if that is the case.

I rolled 6d6, the result is 4, 4, 4, 2, 1, 6 = 21.
Board Rider
Board Rider's picture

If that is considered a success then I will take Fixxxers recommendation and place the Elder Thing on the Soul Gem.

Off to Time and Space!

MinusInnocence
MinusInnocence's picture

OK, Gloria will start her turn with the Cultist when she reaches the Bus Station. Relatively easy and risk-free combat, and if things go belly up against the other guy, at least there's one less monster on the board for Mandy to deal with.

Cultists are weak sauce little bitches. No Horror check and I get +1 to my Combat check, right? 3 Fight + 1 gives me 4 dice to work with.

Combat vs Cultist (typewriter case)
I rolled 4d6, the result is 1, 4, 2, 6 = 13.
MinusInnocence
MinusInnocence's picture

Triflin' ass. All right, onto the main event: a Luck check or I'm devoured. 3 Luck - 1 leaves me with 2 dice. No whammies!

Luck vs being devoured
I rolled 2d6, the result is 4, 5 = 9.
MinusInnocence
MinusInnocence's picture

Nice! No trophies, but I will gladly take my 2 free Clue tokens. Now I just hope my 1 Sneak is good enough to not end up in the pokey.

You do because while the roll was a failure, you're getting to re-roll it, so it's not a new skill check, it's the same check re-rolled. And Rex used his reroll to great effect. You dun gud, boy!

@MinusInnocence, go ahead and roll that Evade check, since you're now ending your Movement in an Innsmouth Location. +0 modifier.

MinusInnocence
MinusInnocence's picture

Right on.

Evade vs Innsmouth
I rolled 1d6, the result is 6 = 6.

I rolled 1d6, the result is 1 = 1.

Mandy Combat vs Child of the Goat

2 Fight + 1 Child of the Goat modifier + 2 Cavalry Saber +1 Wrestle skill
I rolled 6d6, the result is 6, 4, 3, 6, 5, 5 = 29.
Fixxxer
Fixxxer's picture

Alright, we're back in Upkeep. I'll need Slider changes from @Aladdar and @MinusInnocence as well as a Movement Phase action from MinusInnocence.

We had a gate open, which is a definite downside, but we're actually looking a little better this turn otherwise. We can't afford for even one more gate to be open, so we just have to hope that the Mythos card this next time around doesn't spawn a gate. But if we can hold out, then there's a decent chance that Mandy and Norman can close some gates, buying us a little breathing room. Any other gates that can be targeted for closure, even if we can't seal them, probably ought to be.

Aladdar
Aladdar's picture

Keep me where I'm at on sliders and send me into the gate.

MinusInnocence
MinusInnocence's picture

Cool deal. First, I think Gloria should be at 7 Clues: she came to Innsmouth with 5 and the Black Man gave her 2 more.

I also think there is an error in her sliders as they are now - going into my dual combat with the monsters at the Bus Stop, I amended my changes to reflect Speed 3/Sneak 1 and Lore 3/Luck 3.

I'll leave those where they are for now. Even with the bonus to Sneak checks because of the Weather card, I can't move very far from my current location without needing to make yet another Sneak check.

So it seems like Gloria's two Hail Mary moves would be to either engage Schlotzsky's in combat OR try to make it to Falcon's Point and get passage to that island space that I can't pronounce when I'm drunk, to pick up the 2 Clues. But it would mean drawing an Encounter at an unstable location, which may or may not end the game if a Gate opens there.

I think I will try to fight the tiny doll man. 3 Fight - 2 leaves me with 1 die for the Combat check. This is insufficient to kill a monster with 2 Wounds, but my preference is to spend my Clues 1 at a time. So if I succeed on this die roll, I will only burn 1 of my 7 instead of both of my extras (beyond the 5 I need to eventually seal a Gate).

So let's roll.

Combat vs Tcho-Tcho (give me your Common item you tiny gangster bitch)
I rolled 1d6, the result is 2 = 2.
MinusInnocence
MinusInnocence's picture

OK, so that didn't go so hot. I am willing to take the Stamina damage from a failed roll and just roll again, hoping to get at least 1 success before I start burning Clues.

Combat vs Tcho-Tcho (Part Deux)
I rolled 1d6, the result is 4 = 4.
MinusInnocence
MinusInnocence's picture

Right. Well. If I fail that check, I'm back in the Hospital. So now I will spend my 2 Clues a d hope they both come up as a 5 or 6.

Combat vs Tcho-Tcho (for real this time)
I rolled 2d6, the result is 3, 4 = 7.
MinusInnocence
MinusInnocence's picture

Great! Sorry, Mandy, you're on your own. Injury card, please!

Aladdar
Aladdar's picture

So I've been thinking in prior playthroughs, this game isn't nearly as nasty as I've been led to believe. Yeah, I'm thinking we have our first God fight coming up soon. I think we should maybe just close gates and mine clues in hopes of surviving.

Fixxxer
Fixxxer's picture

We've been remarkably lucky to this point. Like... amazingly so. I didn't achieve victory at Arkham Horror until the 5th time I played it. And I've literally lost a game in 20 minutes of tabletop play.

(@minusinnocnece), what I've got for Gloria in the copy of her sheet I have on my desktop is not 100% accurate to what I'm seeing in the Character Sheets thread. I suspect I either failed to properly replace the image file of her sheet or I linked to the wrong copy? That said, the only difference I see is the number of Clues, which you're totally correct about. Regarding her sliders, I had them set to Speed 2/Sneak 2 after reading your comment here:
https://www.dndarchive.com/comment/37075#comment-37075

In looking through the threads, I see where you mentioned possibly altering that (https://www.dndarchive.com/comment/37078#comment-37078), but I didn't get at the time that this was meant to be a definite change. I think that was a misunderstanding on my part, and I'll update her sliders accordingly.

Fixxxer
Fixxxer's picture

@MinusInnocence, the action's on Gloria. I think there's maybe 2 cards in the deck that can remove an Injury, and you found one of them.

MinusInnocence
MinusInnocence's picture

Gloria is all about experimenting. She has forgotten more than I will ever learn about making the sex. Spending that $5 in a heartbeat.

The wonders of modern medicine vs Injury card
I rolled 1d6, the result is 6 = 6.
MinusInnocence
MinusInnocence's picture

All right! Thanks to Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, I think I will discard... Nerve Damage? It seems like the worse one for someone with only 4 Stamina. If I had had both injuries going into the Tcho-Tcho fight, the fist hit would have devoured me outright.
