Fantastic.

I can't recall, My will is at 2 and I'd have to pass a -2 check. So I fail automatically right? Is there a way to spend a clue token to still roll? I can't recall the mechanics there?

Fixxxer
Fixxxer's picture

Yes there is. Any time you spend a Clue token during a skill check, you add 1 die to the roll. This die can be added even after you've already rolled and failed. And you can add another and another to infinity, so long as you have the Clue token to spend on it. Further, if you're granted a reroll of the check for some reason, you get to reroll all the die, including the ones added by Clue tokens.

The Clues tokens for dice mechanic is actually the primary reason things go a little slowly in this format. Even when the answer to whether or not an Investigator can even possibly make the check, I usually still have to wait and check with the player because it's possible to add dice with Clues.

Aladdar
Aladdar's picture

ok, we'll spend the clue I was just awarded to see if I can pass. If not I'll accept the Sanity loss.

I rolled 1d6, the result is 1 = 1.
Aladdar

doh...

Fixxxer
Fixxxer's picture

Doh indeed.

(@minusinnocnece), here's Gloria's encounter. I'll update the Game thread after you've acted.

Gloria Goldberg draws a card.
Gravewayrd - Carefully stepping inside a mausoleum, you are horrified to hear the door slam shut behind you, locking you in with the corpses and coffins. All night you remain trapped, jumping at every soft scratching sound and low moan of the wind. Stay here next turn. In addition, you must pass a Will (-1) check or search the Madness deck for a Necrophobia card and take it.

MinusInnocence
MinusInnocence's picture

Oh, I've read this one. But Gloria isn't locked in the crypt all night with these corpses - they're locked in here with her.

Will 3 - 1 leaves me with 2 dice.

Will vs the urge to commit sex crimes with dead bodies
I rolled 2d6, the result is 5, 5 = 10.
Fixxxer
Fixxxer's picture

On the plus side, the previous environment that required Investigators in street locations to roll vs going to the hospital is gone. On the down side, it's been replaced with an environment that is arguably worse in that all monsters now hit harder (the red hearts on their cards are increased by 1). Take note, also, that the Byakhee has moved to the Sky, so there's that.

We're in Upkeep, so I'll need slider changes from everyone. @Board Rider @MinusInnocence @Aladdar. Mandy is gonna continue on toward Train Station in the hopes of making it to Innsmouth next turn.

MinusInnocence
MinusInnocence's picture

Gloria's sliders, like Gloria herself, are staying where they are. Putrefaction: it's finger lickin' good.

Board Rider

Rex regards the large dog with a mixture of curiosity and sadness. The large animal evokes a long buried memory of his father getting so mad at the family dog, barely more than a puppy, for chewing his work shoes that he hung it from the patio. While the poor animal struggled to breathe his dad kept hitting the dog with the chewed up loafer.

Rex buried the dog, and the memory, successfully until now. Wanting to ensure nobody has to come back here again Rex is intent on shutting this bitch down.

Lore slider up 2 to 5.

Aladdar
Aladdar's picture

I'll keep my stats where they are. I'll either be moving to uninvited isle to get that clue or if someone else goes there, then I'll go to the newspaper in hopes of getting a job.

Fixxxer
Fixxxer's picture

Good job to Gloria for getting that nasty monster out of the draw bag.

@Aladdar, the action's on Norman. Got a couple of options to choose from.

Fixxxer
Fixxxer's picture

Just a reminder to @Aladdar.

Aladdar
Aladdar's picture

I'll exhaust the find gate spell.

Roll for clues
I rolled 1d6, the result is 6 = 6.
Aladdar
Aladdar's picture

So I gain a ton of clues, but I guess I lose that spell.

Fixxxer
Fixxxer's picture

Indeed. But 6 is a LOT of Clue tokens. Find Gate is a great spell, but I'd call this a good trade.

Fixxxer
Fixxxer's picture

@Board Rider, the action's on Rex.

Board Rider
Board Rider's picture

Since Rex has no luck, and I don't want to use clues, isn't that an auto fail to pull an item?

MinusInnocence
MinusInnocence's picture

Right. In many cases an encounter card will tell you that you "may" roll a check or take some other kind of action; but in this case, you can just say "I roll 0 Luck dice and fail" instead of spending resources.

Fixxxer
Fixxxer's picture

Exactly. But even if it seems obvious that one of you won't want to spend Clue tokens to add dice to an otherwise impossible roll, I'm still going to prompt you because I'm not taking the chance that I'll pass you by when you might really have wanted to try. In an event like this, it's just like MI says, you can just say "nah" and we'll move along.

Since the Child of the Goat is treated as a Cultist, and Cultists of Nyarlathotep are Endless, is the Child of the Goat Endless?

Negative. Just actual Cultists (and other monsters that already possess the Endless ability).

So... fun fact: I was incorrect about this. I finally got a response to this after forwarding the question and the official stance is that monsters who include "XXX is treated as a Cultist" are treated in all ways the same as Cultists (just with additional powers), which includes becoming Endless when Nyarlathotep is the big bad.

Fixxxer
Fixxxer's picture

Before we move into the Upkeep Phase, the Mythos has prompted us for a decision. If we care to donate 5 Clue tokens from among our collective stash, Gloria (MI) draws a gate from the pile of unused gate tokens and takes it as a trophy. There are a number of decent reasons why this is good, but the best reason I can think of for us to want this to happen is that Gloria might scoot down to South Church and use it to buy a blessing to rid Rex of his curse. It's worth us talking about.

Also, we're at the Monster Limit, with 1 monster in the Outskirts. There's room for a couple more monsters in Outskirts, but too many more and the Terror Track will go up by 1. Which isn't a horribly big deal, but it's a step towards businesses starting to close.

Also, the Dhole moved right into Mandy's path. Asshole.

MinusInnocence
MinusInnocence's picture

I'm willing to pony up 2 Clues to get the Gate Trophy.

Fixxxer
Fixxxer's picture

Mandy can spare 1.

Board Rider
Board Rider's picture

I think I am still waiting on Fixxx to update Rex's clue amount to 5. If that is correct I don't want to donate any clues so Rex can attempt to seal the gate with a successful Lore check. It requires a successful check and 5 clues, right?

MinusInnocence
MinusInnocence's picture

That's a good point. Assuming Rex is successful, he'll have a Gate Trophy of his own and can buy his own Blessing.

Oh, Jesus Christ... I'm sorry. I'll update your card right now so I don't forget again. Yes, 5 Clue tokens. So he can make an attempt to close the gate using either Lore or Fight. On a failure, he can try again on subsequent rounds so long as he doesn't move from that Location. If he's successful at closing the gate, he takes it as a trophy. Additionally, he can then spend 5 Clue tokens to seal the Location, which prevents gates from opening there in the future (unless a Gate Burst occurs later).

On the subject, there's a monster in the gate's Location. When Rex pops out of the gate on the Movement Phase this next turn, he doesn't have to encounter the monster (though he could choose to, if he wanted). He can occupy the Location and attempt to close the gate when his turn in the Arkham Encounters Phase happens. However, that grace only extends to the turn in which he returns to Arkham, so whether he closes the gate or not, he'll have to either Evade or Fight the monster on the next round's Movement Phase.

Also, just for the sake of clarity, if Rex (or anyone, for that matter) receives a blessing while cursed, the blessing just nullifies the curse, it doesn't replace it. So you won't be blessed, but you won't be cursed anymore either.

Aladdar
Aladdar's picture

I can donate a few clues to help. If we need 2 more, take 2 of mine.

Fixxxer
Fixxxer's picture

Alright, then. Gloria finds herself in possession of a shiny new gate trophy. First player token moves from Gloria to Rex. We're back in Upkeep, so I'll need slider movement from @MinusInnocence @Aladdar and @Board Rider, as well as Movement Phase actions from MinusInnocence and Aladdar.

The Dhole moving where it did really threw a wrench in my plans. Mandy probably can't stand toe to toe with it, so I'm not sure what to do about it. She's probably gonna move her Sneak slider up, continue on to Innsmouth and try to sneak past it. The way things are going, we've got to get someone in Innsmouth to start offsetting these monsters before they end the game for us.

MinusInnocence
MinusInnocence's picture

Wait, have I already spent the extra turn at the Graveyard? I got locked in the mausoleum and then... I don't remember what happened in the next encounter.

Aladdar
Aladdar's picture

Alright, I need some cash to get a few better items to fight with.

I'm going to leave my sliders where they are and move to the newspaper in hopes of getting a job.

Board Rider
Board Rider's picture

No slider changes for Rex.

Then Gloria discovered the body of a Servant of the Outer Gods and took it as a trophy.

MinusInnocence
MinusInnocence's picture

Right on. Gloria will bump her Speed up to 4 and on her turn, she'll move to the church. She'll cash in that Gate Trophy during the Encounter Phase and remove Rex's Curse.

Fixxxer
Fixxxer's picture

Mandy Evade vs Dhole.

4 Sneak -1 Dhole Modifier = 3d6
I rolled 3d6, the result is 5, 5, 1 = 11.
Fixxxer
Fixxxer's picture

Alright, @Board Rider, the action is on Rex.

Board Rider
Board Rider's picture

Can Rex cast Revelation of Script before trying to close and seal the gate? Also, is it Lore -1 to check to close the gate?

Fixxxer
Fixxxer's picture

It's actually +1. The monster card was just covering up half of it.

The spell says "Any Phase," so Rex can certainly try to cast Revelation of Script, and will enjoy a +1 modifier to his check, for a total of 7 dice to try and roll a 6 (5 Lore, +1 modifier from spell, +1 modifier from Ritual Blade). There's 0 Sanity cost, so the only penalty for failure is not getting the spell's benefit.

Board Rider
Board Rider's picture

Lore for Spell.

I rolled 7d6, the result is 2, 4, 2, 1, 3, 5, 1 = 18.
Board Rider
Board Rider's picture

Lore for Gate. I think it's -1? If this check passes Rex will expend 5 clues to seal.

I rolled 4d6, the result is 2, 1, 3, 2 = 8.
Board Rider
Board Rider's picture

I hate this dice roller. 11 rolls and not one 6.

Aladdar
Aladdar's picture

The gate was +1 I think. You should have had maybe 2 more dice I think.

Board Rider
Board Rider's picture

Yep...missed that from previous scan posts. Two more tries to close the gate.

I rolled 2d6, the result is 6, 4 = 10.
Board Rider
Board Rider's picture

Well, hopefully, that works.

Fixxxer
Fixxxer's picture

It does.

@Aladdar, the action's on Norman. I assume he doesn't mind paying a Clue for a Retainer?

Aladdar
Aladdar's picture

That's correct. The government isn't passing another stimulus bill anytime soon. I need a job.

Fixxxer
Fixxxer's picture

Alright, then. A lot has happened.

A gate got closed and a Location got sealed. That's a big deal. Sealing Locations is generally the simplest way to win. If we can get 5 more Locations sealed (for a total of 6), then we win.

A new gate opened up in Innsmouth. A monster went into a vortex, so the Deep Ones Rising track has started filling. On that subject, I guess I neglected to scan the Deep Ones Rising token and my scanner is acting up right now, so we're using the Aquatic Location tile instead. Meh.

The monster in the sky got to move and there was an Investigator in a street location, so now Mandy's got to deal with that shit. But since it's in Innsmouth now and not Arkham, it isn't currently counting against the Monster Limit.

Rex isn't cursed anymore. Yay!. But he's got a marching band of monsters just outside his current Location, plus another sharing the Location with him. Boo!

Norman got a job. He's gonna need to roll for that retainer starting now, this phase. 1d6, discard on a result of 1.

We're in Upkeep. Gonna need slider changes from @Aladdar, @Board Rider and (MinusInnocence), as well as Movement Phase actions. Plus Aladdar needs to roll for Norman's Retainer.

Mandy's gonna spend 2 Clue tokens during Upkeep to fill up the green spaces on the Clue side of the Deep Ones Rising Track. During Movement, she'll fight the Byakhee. Barring odd circumstance, that's probably gonna be her turn.

MinusInnocence
MinusInnocence's picture

Gloria will move her Speed slider down and Fight slider up 1 space each. On her move, she will go to Silver Twilight Lodge to grab the Clue and hopefully join the Order.

Aladdar
Aladdar's picture

Keep sliders where they are.

Roll for retainer.

I rolled 1d6, the result is 6 = 6.
Aladdar
Aladdar's picture

I'll move to the Riverton streets.
