Anyone interested in "Betrayal at House on the Hill"

I've really enjoyed playing Arkham Horror on here recently. There's another old game I have with similar qualities as that which I'd love to try to give a shot playing in this format together on here.

Betrayal at House on the Hill is another cooperative board game where you are stuck in a haunted house, working together to find a way out by exploring the game. There is a twist however, at some point during the game you unlock the haunt which reveals the real enemy of the game (Who happens to be one of your fellow players). At that point the game switches from a cooperative game to a cooperative vs player game.

If you're interested, let me know. Here's a link to Will Wheaton and friends playing this game on tabletop a few years back.

Count me in. I love that game. Very nicely-written. How are you thinking to make it run on the Archive? I ask because getting Arkham Horror to work took a LOOOOOT of scanning and working with Photoshop. Once the initial investment of work was done, the rest is generally pretty easy and nearly effortless.

Aladdar

Pretty much the same way. It'll take me a few weeks to get everything ready to go.

I figure I'll scan the major house cards and then the smaller items as needed.

Board Rider

I have never played the game and if there is a spot I would like to play.

Aladdar

Great, so that's 3 of us now. It's a 3 - 6 player game. I'd like to get at least 4 so I'll leave this open for the rest of the week at least.

@Fixxxer One question you might be able to help with. The die rolls use special dies with two 1s, two 2s, and 2 0s. You roll these and then combine your scores. How might you suggest we handle the die rolls? Should we maybe just assume that 1 and 2 are 0s, 3 and 4 are 1s, and 5 and 6 are 2s or do you have ideas for a better method?

Fixxxer

Huh. I'd forgotten that. Unless @Talanall knows of a way to insinuate dice with a 0, we can just roll 1d3 and call 3 a zero.

Talanall

I would do 1d3-1.

I rolled 1d3-1, the result is 2, -1 = 1.
I rolled 1d3-1, the result is 1, -1 = 0.
I rolled 1d3-1, the result is 1, -1 = 0.
I rolled 1d3-1, the result is 1, -1 = 0.
I rolled 1d3-1, the result is 3, -1 = 2.
I rolled 1d3-1, the result is 1, -1 = 0.
I rolled 1d3-1, the result is 1, -1 = 0.
I rolled 1d3-1, the result is 2, -1 = 1.
I rolled 1d3-1, the result is 2, -1 = 1.

Fixxxer

Huh. Now why didn't I think of that?

Aladdar

hmmm, ok, let me test that.

I rolled 4d3-1, the result is 1, 2, 2, 3, -1 = 7.
Aladdar

that didn't work. What do I do to roll say 6 dice in that manner? I see Talannal did something to create that.

Trying 4d3.each(-1)
I rolled 4d3.each(-1), the result is 2, 0, 2, 2 = 6.
Aladdar

ok, I think that works, but that might be annoying. @Fixxxer original idea of just doing 1d3 and treating 3 as 0 might be the easiest for people to keep track of.

Thoughts?

Fixxxer

Testing 1d3-1 x3

I rolled 1d3-1, the result is 3, -1 = 2.
I rolled 1d3-1, the result is 1, -1 = 0.
I rolled 1d3-1, the result is 3, -1 = 2.
Aladdar

ah, ok. So either of those ways would work then.

I rolled 1d3-1x3, the result is 2 = 2.
Aladdar

try again

I rolled 1d3-1 x 3, the result is 3 = 3.
Aladdar

once more

I rolled 1d3-1 x3, the result is 3 = 3.
Aladdar

what am I doing wrong?

Fixxxer

I don't think there's an X factor in any of the dice commands. If I'm right, I think you're looking for 3d3.each(-1)

I rolled 3d3.each(-1), the result is 0, 2, 1 = 3.
Aladdar

Ah, you separated it with a semicolon.

I rolled 1d3-1, the result is 1, -1 = 0.
I rolled 1d3-1, the result is 2, -1 = 1.
I rolled 1d3-1, the result is 2, -1 = 1.
MinusInnocence

I am DEFINITELY interested. I love this game.

Awesome, I'll start scanning in items next week and I'll update again when I'm ready. What is everyone's holiday plans like? Should we just start after Christmas or are you all free before?

Fixxxer

I'll be generally free during, but from past experience, I'm guessing things will be even slower than usual around here for about a week after Christmas.

Aladdar

Ok, works for me. I'll take the time up through Christmas trying to get everything ready to go and hopefully we can start after Christmas or if nothing else, in the new year if that's ok with everyone?

It'll also give anyone else who's interested time to join up.

Board Rider

Whenever works for me.

Aladdar

I may have one more friend willing to come over and play with us. Waiting to get a final confirmation.

I'm also almost done scanning all the house cards in. I'll need to start working on monsters next. I think for character sheets and cards I'll just type the text in for you and we'll keep a text sheet for characters unless that becomes a problem.

Fixxxer

For cards, that's what I'd do. For character sheets, you might consider scanning them and keeping master files on hand for when skill sliders change. Assuming you have Photoshop, you just keep a .psd file with the sliders as separate layers. When one needs changed, you slide it over, save the file, then save a copy as a .jpg to be uploaded and displayed.

Aladdar

I just wanted to give everyone an update here.

I still really want to do this at some point, but I think I'd be terrible at running it right now.

After Mom died in January I've really been struggling with motivation to do new things. Combine that with the effects of Lexapro which had already sapped a bit of my motivation and I'm not doing real well.

I still really want to run this, but I think I'm at least a month or two from being back to normal. With everyone's consent, let's table this for now and I'll come back later.

In the meantime, if anyone else wants to run it, I've already scanned a lot of the cards in. I don't mind sending you my work and playing in a game that someone else runs of it.

Board Rider

Take care of you first buddy. We'll be here when you're ready.
