Listen and Spot right here!

I rolled 1d20+7, the result is 16, 7 = 23.

What is Grim's range and other penalties for taking a shot from where he is right now?

Talanall

He's in his second range increment.

Hmmmm.... if he fails a move and hide check, he'll lose a suprise. But if he fires right now, he stands a good chance of hitting then moving fast to close. I think he'll attempt the shot if he gets a suprise round on them. He'll also have his wolf advance 50 ft.

I rolled 1d20+9, the result is 12, 9 = 21.
I rolled 1d6+2, the result is 6, 2 = 8.
Talanall

The pigs are not aware of Grimvaalk's presence. So yes, if you opt to engage them, he'll get a surprise round. They have concealment (20%) relative to him, though, because their position is screened from him by undergrowth.

If you want to proceed, then please go ahead and roll an initiative check for me.

Technically, he's got slightly more movement than he has distance to cover before he hits undergrowth. You want him just to go as far as he can?

Undergrowth cost movement to move into, right? He'll move until he gets in the first square, so he has options next round to move out or to plow through, depending on which way they run.

Talanall

He won't have enough movement to enter a square with undergrowth.

Drawing on some of Grimvaalk's experience as a hunter, I'd like to make a survival check. He's trying to bring them down quickly, but not over kill any of them either. He's fairly confident that he'll hit what he shoots at. I propose if he makes the check, he shoots at a pig that has a good chance of going down after two shots but not neccessarily the smallest one. If he fails, he picks one at random.

If you don't agree, I'll just start with the closest one.

I'm not totally sure I understand what you're asking for with that movement. Also, I think maybe I should remind you that ranged attacks occur in the middle of your mount's double move or run actions, and happen at a -4 or -8 penalty, respectively.

Move East (light undergrowth; cost 2 squares),
Move East (light undergrowth; cost 2 squares),

Move South-East (slope; cost 1 square),
Attack: Fire (Pew! Pew),
Move 2:

Done.

Talanall

Are you saying he's going to move east through the undergrowth with a 1-square deviation to the southeast in his last square of movement, take his Rapid Shot attacks, then continue straight east until he runs out his movement in the stream?

I take it that this is meant to try to avoid concealment penalties.

Counting the arrows expended during the slaying of the last pig, Grimvaalk is down 10 arrows, which hit their targets and were thereby spoiled (4 from last time, and six from this). There are four arrows whose status is currently unknown. On a d100: 01-50 = intact; 51-100 = ruined.

Also, Grimvaalk probably doesn't need to roll Survival to track this critter. It's bleeding like its proverbially stuck self.

Wæs se grimma gæst Grendel haten,
mære mearcstapa, se þe moras heold

Darker

Grimvaalk will drag all his spoils back to camp.

Grim wants to pick up any ruined arrows -- he has fletching skill, so if there's more downtime waiting for everyone to burn more shit, he'll see what he can do to make some new arrows from the runied remains and materials he can find... the progress won't be great, but arrows aren't that hard to make.

Talanall

That's fine. Track it on your character sheet.

Wæs se grimma gæst Grendel haten,
mære mearcstapa, se þe moras heold

Talanall

As a matter of courtesy, I'll do the heavy lifting on this. Crafting ordinary arrows is a task for Craft (bowmaking), DC 12. Repairing an item uses the same DC as making it from scratch; the only difference is that instead of needing raw materials of value equal to 1/3 the market price, you need only 1/5 market price.

Either way, the progress per time unit of crafting/repairing the item is tabulated as (check result x DC), incrementing as needed. If you're tracking weekly progress, then you state the price of the item in silver pieces; if you need to track on a daily scale, it's in copper pieces. A quiver of arrows costs 1 gp, or 10 sp, or 100 cp. Twenty arrows to the quiver means that a single arrow costs 5 cp to purchase, 1.67 cp to make, or 1 cp to repair.

I'm prepared to allow you to deduct from any cash you have on hand, as an abstraction.

Grimvaalk's skill check is +5. Assuming he takes 10, he makes 180 cp of progress per day. We can divide that by eight to get 22 cp/hour. So we'll say that he can fix or make an arrow in about 5 minutes, providing he has no distractions to contend with.

Wæs se grimma gæst Grendel haten,

Talanall

Edited to correct my math. He can make 1 arrow per 5 minutes.

Well, when there is more downtime today, he's going to attempt to fix up some arrows.

Talanall

There's enough pork to feed Oni and Yonah, plus two of the goblins. If people let their wolves loose on the pig's carcass, there's enough to go around for them as well. Because of the distance involved, it'll be necessary to either take turns feeding the wolves, or to drag the carcass back. It's really your option how you guys deal with that, and you certainly also have the option of just feeding them from supplies.

Otherwise, it looks like you've collectively opted to continue with the waiting game. Am I correct?

Talanall

Maybe a couple of hours, at this point. It'll start to get dark soon.

Wæs se grimma gæst Grendel haten,

Grimvaalk lets his wolf eat (and any other one that comes back) from whatever is left. Might as well feed them there rather than dragging it back.

Darker

Grimvaalk also suppliments the pig with his earlier findings and his everlasting rations. How many days worth of meals does that provide?

MinusInnocence

Oni will help Fanax carry the meat back to camp.

Darker wrote:

The everlasting rations produce one Medium ration per day (equivalent to 4 Small rations).

The pig feeds two Mediums and two Smalls, plus (probably) three Medium wolves if they're allowed to gnaw on the bones and so forth. It's highly perishable in this warm weather, so extra portions will not persist.

Survival doesn't appear to differentiate by size, which probably is some kind of oversight. We'll assume it's meant to indicate Medium creatures by default.

Survival checks to get along in the wild without food are predicated on an 8-hour activity cycle. On that time scale, Grimvaalk's result of 30 would feed 11 Medium creatures. Prorated for a 1-hour activity cycle, he gathered enough for 1.38 Medium creatures, which I think we can eyeball as 5 Small creatures.

Again, the food that he gathered is largely of a perishable nature, although he could leave the wild rhubarb to be picked at a later time and could opt to hang the pheasant overnight.

Are you guys building any camp/cook fires, or are you going to try to prepare your food on the one that (I presume, anyway) you plan to keep burning overnight in the cavern entryway?

I'm asking because I'm trying to ascertain what light sources will exist during the upcoming nighttime phase of play.

Wæs se grimma gæst Grendel haten,

Board Rider

I assume a separate camp fire will be set up. Wouldn't the fire at the cave entrance be a tad too hot to cook and eat next to comfortably?

Fixxxer

To eat next to, certainly. Not to mention the thought that another blast of cold might come at any time. But it could be used to cook, if we needed to press it into that service for some reason.

Zathrus's thought is to keep as much fuel handy as possible and for us to keep the fire burning through the night. No sense in letting it burn down and giving an angry dragon a clear path to where we're bunked out.

Cronono

Gorx likely doesn't have a need for a fire.

Talanall

It sounds like you guys are leaning toward a scenario where you build a small fire to cook over, then put it out when you're done. And that you're going to set up a watch rotation that will include a duty to see to it that the fire in front of the cavern entryway is kept stoked up to prevent the dragon from attacking or escaping.

Is that correct?
