This is good news. If there's anything I can do, don't hesitate.

I've got to look up Inquisitor. I better make it a priority. Good luck!

well, it was supposed to be a week. Ten days later and Carol is finally getting settled in at home but she is in really sorry shape. It's going to be a long time before our schedules return to normal so my hiatus from work will have to be extended.

Thus far, it hasn't dramatically impacted my presence here, but we're not out of the woods yet. Thanks for all the well wishes from everyone.

Heading out of town until March 15th. I may or may not be able to post, so assume I'm a NPC unless I post otherwise.

I'll be in France and Morocco from April 19th through May 2nd. While I'm not leaving for a week, there's a bunch of stuff I have to do prior. I should be checking in both before and during, but I'm less likely to do more than the minimum you need from me.

Talanall

Sounds like a cool trip, even if it's for work.

Heard that before.

Please, please, PLEASE eat well every chance you get on this trip.

This is not a work trip for me. My wife is a professor of History, so she'll be doing research most of the non-travel weekdays, so it is work-related for her, but it is also less structured than normal 'business travel'. I've been to Paris before, but this time we'll be able to visit the Loire Valley and a few other fun things. This should be a good trip. Importantly, the kids will not be coming. We're flying my mother out to Tennessee to babysit.

Darker

Last time I was in Paris I sat at the front table in at a burlesque show and got pulled onto the stage so a girl could smack a cigarette out of my mouth with a whip. Good times.

This coming weekend is traditionally the busiest weekend of the year for me. Between Thursday evening and Sunday evening, we've got more than 2000 reservations scheduled. It isn't going to be pleasant. After this Wednesday and lasting through Sunday, I should have time to check the forums once a day about 1am, but I don't know if I'll have the energy or not. It's more than possible that I might just sleep on the chef's table at work to avoid driving home in such an exhausted state. In that time frame, if anything important in any of the PbP games hinges on one of my characters, please don't hold things up by waiting for me.

Talanall

I'll be traveling from May 9 through May 13. There's a better-than-decent chance that I'll be able to participate normally in campaigns for at least some of that period.

Reminder: Tomorrow begins the weekend of hell for me. I need to be back at work in 7 hours to prepare for the spiked dildo I'm about to receive. I'll try to check in after my shifts, but don't hold anything up on my account.

Darker

How was that spiked dildo? I was considering getting one, but I wanted to wait for your review first.

American Me . My mom rented it from blockbuster for the 4th of July when I was like ten. There were a lot of things about that movie that left an impression, but the spiked dildo scene more than any other...

Edit - Se7en didn't phaze me at all.

This coming Thursday in the early morning, I leave out for Indianapolis to attend a friend's wedding. From there, I'll continue on to Orcas Island, just north of Seattle, for a new job. It's a 4-month contract with a resort that will very likely turn into year-round employment there. Regardless, I'll have internet access the entire time, but between the wedding, traveling and getting settled in a new home, I'm likely to be short of usable time for a little while. I plan to check in as per normal, but please don't let any decision or need for action from one of my characters hold up anyone's game.

Just a note to say that I'm traveling and I'm still alive. I spent 13 hours in the truck the other day and have stopped to attend the wedding of a good friend in a couple of hours. I'll be taking off again tomorrow. Google says I've got another 32 hours in the truck to look forward to. Glee.

I queued up The Thrilling Adventure Hour podcast and got about halfway through the episodes before the trip was done. I've been through the episode list before, but it was a coupe of years ago. I really, really recommend them. Almost pissed myself laughing on a few occasions.

I'm in LA today through Tuesday. If I cause any delay, please NPC as appropriate.

Ditto for me, but I'm in Austin, TX and will be there until Saturday. I should have time to keep up, but if I end up holding up something, roll for me.

I'm gonna be out of town for the next week or so. In the morning, the girlfriend and I are getting up and taking a ferry to the mainland, then driving into Seattle (where we're gonna spend some time in Chinatown and the International District...WOOT!). On Wednesday morning, I fly out to Tallahassee, FL. I'll be splitting my time between there and Pensacola, FL, as I have a wedding to attend. I'll be back on Wednesday the 26th. I'll have my phone with me, so I can likely check in, but I'm also going to be pulled in a million different directions by people who want to visit with me, so I'm not 100% certain how often I'll actually check in. If it becomes required, please NPC any of my characters.

I came home from my trip to discover that the internet was down across much of the San Juan islands. This lasted for a full week before the root problem was discovered and fixed. I seem to have full and constant internet access again now.

Fixxxer
Fixxxer's picture

I'm not going anywhere, but I thought I'd report on something. It's come to my attention that during the winter, storms often cause problems for the underwater trunk lines that carry internet signals to and from the island I live on. It's rarely a big problem, but the internet can go out for several hours, maybe even a day, which is what happened yesterday, with the connection I have now being spotty as it's repaired. As a result, I occasionally might not be as quick to respond to PbP stimuli as I might like to be, at least during the next couple of months. Just didn't want anyone to think I was just being a lazy piece of shit. I mean... I am, but I have an excuse. I wrote this post at 2:45pm Pacific, and the internet went down while I was writing it.

Talanall

I will proceed with this knowledge in hand. Mind. Whatever.

I'll keep it under consideration. Thank you for letting me know.

I'm moving the last of my stuff to a new apartment today. The local internet people have been remarkably slow in getting us the information we need to make an informed decision about whether to pay for fiber service or accept their basic LTE fixed wireless internet, so I'll have my phone to check the internet for a few days. I'll be around, but as I recall, my phone doesn't seem to like the dice roller.

Does anyone know anything about LTE fixed internet? Darker, maybe? Would it be sufficient for two people for basic internet surfing and occasional multiplayer gaming via computer, PS3 and/or PS4?

Talanall
Talanall's picture

Unless there is some kind of decisive price advantage, get the fiber. MY in-laws use the LTE offering from either AT&T or Verizon (I forget which). It's adequate for basic browsing, and most of the time it's okay for streaming one thing at a time. When you start drawing on it for two streams at once, or a stream and a game, it turns a bit crappy. The bandwidth is 10 Mbps down/1 up. And you cap out at ~200 GB of data consumption per month. Basically, it's a cellphone plan with a data cap about 100 times higher than standard for a phone.

Most of the time, 200 GB is enough for my household. We hit cap if a new season of Walking Dead hits Netflix during a month when I install a couple of especially large games. If you have an overage with AT&T's LTE plans, they charge you $10 for 50 additional GB.

It is better than dial-up or DSL, but that's about as much as I can say for it. AT&T is charging about $60/month plus taxes in my area, once the initial 12-month contract runs out.

Verizon's LTE offering is similar speed-wise, but they want $10/month/GB capacity. So if you get 2 GB a month of data, they want $20. If you have an overage, they'll charge you $15/GB. It's utterly inadequate for more than very occasional video consumption. My in-laws can get by with it because they're both in their 60s and have DirectTV, and I don't think they even know what Spotify or Netflix IS.

LTE also suffers from quality of service problems during peak usage. All subscribers in a given area are going to be served out of the same cell tower (along with everyone using data through a phone). The tower is served by a backhaul, usually fiber. If it's a busy tower, then the traffic may be more than the backhaul can carry, and that results in throttling, higher latency, etc.

Fiber's usually competitively priced with LTE where it's available. If I could get AT&T fiber, which is priced at the same point as the LTE offering, I would do it in a hot minute. It comes with a 1 TB data cap at the low end, and the speeds are comparable to cable. Some of their nicer offerings are faster and have higher caps (context: I use cable with unlimited data now, and the AT&T unlimited gigabit offering is priced about the same, promising speeds likely to exceed current by about 10x).

Probably you want the fiber. I would get the fiber.

Fixed LTE isn't as bad as the older standard LTE plans. Its got a good guaranteed minimum speed and you get several devices on a plan. Speeds are usually over 10Mbps, which is pretty damn slow compared to fiber, but it's over the hump for one or two simultaneous streams, especially if you are streaming to mobile on a small screen. Online gaming may or may not work well -- check the game and see what it recommends (not the minimum). I used to play Starcraft II on 6Mbps just fine.

But, fiber is usually blazing fast. You can do it all. If there's like a $20/month difference, I'd go fiber. If it's like $100, yeah, I can see the LTE looking appealing.

If all else fails, go for one without a contract cause you can just try it a month and ditch it for the other.

We stopped by the physical office of our preferred internet provider today and found out that while they neglected to tell us, they've been working on getting us the answers we need, including sending a guy out to our place to inspect the grounds. We were told that because enough of our neighbors have fiber, they'll probably be able to do an aerial drop to our house, costing us nothing. Looks like it's fiber for the win.

All that delicious bandwidth.

I'll be on 16-day vacation starting this coming Monday, which will include traveling. I'll have internet access and no problems checking the games I'm in, but I felt it was worth mentioning.

deadDMwalking
deadDMwalking's picture

Usually a 16-day vacation is code for 'I have an employment gap before I start my new job'. If this is a real '2 solid weeks of vacation plus a 3rd weekend' than I am envious and happy for you at the same time. What are you doing for that time? If you plan to be naked for all/most of it, I highly recommend that you make liberal use of sun block regardless of how wintery you think it is where you're going.

Fixxxer
Fixxxer's picture

Heh. It's an actual vacation, plus a "weekend" when the place I work for is currently closed. My girlfriend Sierra has not met my family yet. She has also never driven across the country. So we're dealing with both of those issues by driving from Washington to Florida and back. We'll be heading south first to spend a few days in San Francisco, then east to New Orleans, where we'll hopefully be joined by MinusInnocence and Talanall from some Dionysian eats. Then we'll cut over to Destin Beach so I can take her to McGuire's Irish Pub and prove to her they have the best root beer in the world. Then to Tallahassee for a few days so I can introduce her to my family and show her where I grew up. Afterward, we'll head north to Savannah for a day, then from there to Chicago for a few days. After that, we'll take I90 across South Dakota and Montana and Lookout Pass through Idaho, back to Washington. If that puts me near anyone here, I'd love to get lunch on my way through.

Fixxxer
Fixxxer's picture

Just a reminder. We'll be leaving out at fuckthato'clock tomorrow morning. There shouldn't be any interruption in my ability to check on the PbP games, but especially seeing as to how I'll be driving straight from upstate Washington to San Francisco, it might not be much during the day. DMs, please don't let me hold up anything that could move forward with input from my PC.

Matt and Sierra made it safely to the greater New Orleans area early on Friday afternoon. This weekend immediately preceded Mardi Gras, so they ended up staying not very far from where I grew up. Laura and I came down to join them, so we picked them up and squired them around New Orleans and the surrounding area over the next couple of days. The visit culminated in a nice dinner with MinusInnocence, his lady, and their little boy, and a good time was had by all. Matt and Sierra headed east the next morning, running ahead of a violent storm front. I think they must be safely in Tallahassee and meeting his family and friends there.

We are indeed. Due to a long detour because of an accident on I-12, we got overrun by the storm just as we hit Mississippi, and it persisted until just before Tallahassee, which was itself under a tornado warning when we arrived. It was a remarkably clear day today, though.

We've visited a series of international markets, my favorite brewery, and a couple of local food joints I wanted to introduce Sierra to. We hit up McGuire's in Destin Beach on the way, but discovered that for whatever reason, the quality of their food has dropped dramatically since I last visited, which is nothing short of heartbreaking. Dinner tonight was at a place called Lucilla's, which I'd never been to, and it was stellar. Butterscotch pot de creme.... yeah.
