Ratings

Our rating system may seem a little obscure and incomprehesable to some, which is why this guideline page was created. When we were working on creating a review system, we wanted to use something D&D-related, rather than a simple system of numbers or stars or the like. After a few failed test runs, we finally settled on our current system, which uses standard D&D die rolls as ratings.

1d4 - Most commonly associated with the damage done with the lowly dagger or very low-level magical effects, this die is the lowest available roll one can make without resorting to fractions. A reviewed item that scores this rating result is probably not worth buying at all and should only be used if it was given to you for free.
1d6 - From weapon damage to sneak attack damage to basic spell damage, the d6 is a versitile die, but one that is best used when it is stacked with many more dice like it. A reviewed item with this rating result generally isn't worth the time and money for the average gamer, but might be useful to a select group or a particuarly imaginative individual.
1d8 - This die is the most common hit dice die among the core classes as well as being the damage die for a number of "middle of the road" weapons. A reviewed item with this rating result attached to it is not an entirely bad item, but lacks enough good to completely make up for the bad it does contain.
2d4 - Most often associated with the damage from a spiked chain, a weapon many DMs consider dubious at best and banned from their games at worst, a reviewed item that scores this rating result could have been better if a little more effort was put into it.
1d10 - Both the hit dice of a fighter and the damage of the default DMG fighter weapon (the bastard sword), the d10 is an average die in most respects. A reviewed item that scores this rating result is just that...average. It could have done with a lot more attention, but isn't completely worthless.
1d12 - Commonly used as the hit dice of barbarians and the undead, the d12 generally doesn't get more attention than that (greataxe damage aside). A reviewed item with this rating result attached to it had more good to it than bad, but could have used a little more work.
2d6 - The most damaging medium-sized weapon the core rules support, the greatsword, deals 2d6 damage. A reviewed item with this rating result is not perfect, but has a lot of potential.
2d8 - An ogre's greatclub deals 2d8 damage, which has killed many an unlucky adventurer. This rating result means that the reviewed item was very good and would probably be useful to most gamers.
1d20 - The quintessential die behind the d20 system, the d20 is rolled more often than any other die. A reviewed item with this rating result is nearly perfect and would make a fine addition to any gamer's collection.
1d100 (d%) - The d100 is often times the dungeon master's best friend, being used for everything from chance encounters to random treasure. A reviewed item that scores this rating result is as close to perfect as an item can be. The only way it could have been better would have been to arrive at your door with a million dollars taped to it.
