Description: When Deimos looks at you, he prefers to be above you. This isn’t usually a problem because he stands 6’4 tall, but even so, he is usually at a higher elevation. Whether it is on his horse, a patio, a parapet, or a staircase, Deimos is practically always above those he is speaking with, talking down at them. With short, deep brown, well groomed hair and a clean shaven face, Deimos’s face usually looks bored and disinterested. This is half-true. Deimos was born with a palsy that has damaged the nerves in his face, restricting his range of expressions. This hides the fact that Deimos is remarkably attentive, while exaggerating the impression that he simply doesn’t care about most of what he sees. His quiet green eyes never seem fully open and give him a dull appearance. While this might be true about his personality, which is curt and lacks much flair, he is actually quite intelligent.

Weighing in at 190 pounds, Deimos is fit and tough. His wiry body is thin, with lean muscles that are well suited to a runner. While on duty, Deimos always wears his armor, which is completely unadorned. The suit uses a thin, deep brown leather undersuit over the plates, bracers and grieves, with matching deep brown straps. When off duty, Deimos wears the simplest clothing that is acceptable for the occasion, usually a plain suit or a brown tunic and trousers. He prefers to work long hours, however, and is rarely out of his armor when not sleeping.

Personality: While a noble birth and a comfortable childhood might seem like boons, those years gave the barely sociable Deimos very little to work with. He comes off as resentful, although not about anything in particular, to just about anyone he talks to. His life is his work and his work is mundane, so he behaves in a very matter of fact manner. Beyond this, he is also petty. He enjoys making quips about the flaws of those he is speaking with, but takes any comments in return very personally. This is mostly a façade. He isn’t vindictive about these things, but acts in this manner to keep the aura of respect around them.

History: The unremarkable past of Deimos is perhaps his greatest weapon in his position. Certainly not the most talented warrior and far from a diplomat, Deimos grew up a comfortable life which could have led him to a position in the often stressful world of land ownership. His father decided the skills of management were beyond his capacity and that the family’s estate would be best left in the hands of his younger brother, Hertanio. As a result, Deimos was forced to find work and he very easily was able to get a position as an officer in the city guard. Having no desire for advancement or responsibility, Deimos is still a patrol leader after six years of service, when others in similar positions normally rise in less than three years, particularly if they have lineage.

Current Events: Deimos is known for being a solid officer and incorruptible. Nothing in his past is a secret. He has no wife to hide lovers from, no vices or addictions and no real ties to his family. The law has become his life, not because of some profound philosophical respect for order, but instead simply because it was a nice, available option. His superiors love him and those under his command generally dislike him. However, they do appreciate the hard work he does, but his personality and hard-line policy are often obstacles to liking him. His unbending view applies equally to those in his charge and those he is sworn to protect. Truthfully, Deimos enjoys the idea of persecuting the guilty much more than protecting the innocent and takes some hollow joy in browbeating and harassing suspects.

While not particularly driven, when Deimos is bested, particularly publicly, it often sparks him to action. He likes to keep a reputation for being hard and fair, but even more, being impenetrable. If a criminal makes it a habit of committing serial crimes in his area, Deimos will investigate incessantly, even on his off time, until he gets rid of the person responsible or at the very least moves that person out of his district. Saving face is his highest priority besides the law, so if someone publicly embarrasses him he does not hesitate to find a way to get back at them by digging up information to return the favor or, if he is so lucky, to obtain grounds to arrest them. Few people are as squeaky clean as he is, and he has some talent at finding the information he needs as well as no shortage of time in which to search for it.

Using Deimos: Deimos is a patrol leader for a decent sized city’s guard or watch. He does not like helping people and questions any requests for help. Deimos is the first stop in the hierarchy, so low level player characters will have to go through him first if they wish to deal with the city watch. Deimos can serve any function that a generic guard patrol leader might serve, lending his personality to the position. He could even serve as an awkward ally to the PCs investigating a crime in his district.
