While people from many races live within Tholldan, the nation is commonly referred to as “The Dwarven Fatherland.”  Some people believe that dwarves come from deep within the earth and that they eventually tunneled their way to the surface somewhere in the Valley of the Khlor.  The dwarves of Tholldan say that they have always lived there since the beginning of time, “long before the upstart younger races showed up.”  Regardless of which, if either, is true, one thing that is undisputed is that as long as history has been recorded, dwarves have lived in Tholldan.

The nation itself is mainly comprised of two distinct areas.  One area, the Valley of the Khlor, is a series of fertile hills where dwarves, along with residents from a few other races, make their homes under the sun.  The other area, Undermountain, exists, as the name suggests, under the mountains, where mining, smelting, stone cutting and metallurgy take place without being interrupted by the weather.  Undermountain is almost completely populated by dwarves, but a small number of some other races have decided that living underground suits them just fine.

Tholldan has been a part of the Empire since it was founded.  All of the ruling Khlor have seemed very pleased by this fact, since the Imperial Council helps to set the price for Tholldan’s constant export of mithril and other precious metals to many of the Imperial nations.  The nation makes a great deal of profit taxing the merchant’s guild exports to non-Imperial nations, such as Taj-Alid, but Tholldan’s loyalty to the Empire is unquestioned and was certainly proven during the Great Imperial War.
