Once the center of all magical and scientific research in the world, the Cursed Island of Aziz-Kabar is completely dead now.  Great arcane colleges and divine research temples once rose above the hills and trees to create an impressive skyline.  Great foundries produced items of immense power.  Some of the greatest spellcasters in all of history made their home on the island and promising students from every corner of the world were sent to learn under these great instructors.

However, one morning, without any warning at all, the hills exploded and great mountains shot up from their decimated ranks.  The mountains cracked and split open, allowing great flowing rivers of magma to churn forth.  Within less than an hour, the monumental buildings and everyone still within them were destroyed and buried.  The entire surface of the island is a wasteland of ash and volcanic rock.  Volcanoes still belch ash and vomit lava in what seems like a slow, but never-ending flow.

The destruction of the island was widely believed to be a punishment from the gods.  Many said that the gods were insulted that mortals tried to achieve such power, so they smote the heart of this power as an example.  As a result, a time occurred when spellcasters of all types were persecuted and, in many cases, executed for no crime at all beyond being who they were.  This persecution lasted only a few years, but in many areas of the world, spellcasters are still subject to distrust or even outright hatred.
